Consumers Union last Thursday asked USDA to retest a cow that was determined in November 2004 to be negative for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) using a test called the “Western blot.”
Representatives of the Consumers Union met with USDA officials earlier in February and urged the agency to revise its testing methods.
The Consumers Union is asking the USDA to not only retest the cow from November 2004, but also to send samples from the cow to the UK for independent testing.

Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, is urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to adopt the Western blot test in addition to its current testing methods to determine if a suspected animal has mad cow disease.
In light of the positive Western blot test on an animal originally testing negative in November, Consumers Union said it is urging USDA to immediately send brain tissue to a laboratory in England for independent confirmation.

WASHINGTON - April 28 - Preliminary estimates released today by the government reveal the highest number of motor vehicle deaths since 1990 and a 10 percent increase in SUV rollover deaths in the past year, sounding a wake-up call to Congress that key auto-safety provisions must be passed immediately.
Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports, renewed its call on Congress to approve safety measures in S. 1072, which was passed by the Senate in February but opposed by both the House leadership and the Bush Administration, which has described the safety measures as "too prescriptive."
Consumers Union’s testing has shown these systems to be effective in preventing rollovers.
