Contact (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contact is a 1997 film adaptation of the science fiction novel Contact by Carl Sagan.
The movie opens with a CG shot of almost 3 minutes, moving away from the Earth through the solar system, away from the Milky Way, and through other galaxies, ending up by coming out of the eye of young Ellie.
Part of the movie is set at the Very Large Array, an NRAO observatory near Socorro, New Mexico.

 Contact movie review
The main plot is the interception of an alien communication by Eleanor Arroway (Jodie Foster), the decoding of the communication to reveal a transport, and the actual contact between humans and aliens.
Every aspect of the movie is brought out excellently, from Arroway's initial interception of the alien signal to her travel through a wormhole and encountering aliens, which is done in the best manner possible.
Yet, in the movie, the reverse is what happens, i.e., her "watch" measures eighteen hours, whereas the "watch" on Earth measures a fraction of a second for the loss of contact with her transport (see addendum below).

Her eligibility for the spot failed when she is questioned on her beliefs in the existence of god by the President's spiritual advisor (McConaughey); Allie, being an atheist, a result of her belief in fact and science, refuses to budge upon questioning.
At this point the movie plot thickens considerably as she is romantically involved with the President's spiritual advisor.
CONTACT works by NOT delving in controversy but rather, touches the thinking audience, urging them to ponder upon the questions raised in the film concerning fact and faith; whether one can actually find compromise within.

Review: Contact   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Contact is likely to change a lot of perceptions -- not only about the role of humankind in the universe, but about what special effects can do for a movie when they're used in the service of a story, rather than the other way around.
Contact is believable in part because it doesn't replace true science with vague terms and gobbledygook.
Although Contact is rightfully being billed as the story of humanity's first encounter with an extraterrestrial life form, at its heart, it's really more about Ellie and her quest for meaning in life.

 Contact Movie Review
It is Ellie's journey that is the main thrust of the story, and not the first contact (this is also evident in the fact that one of the changes from the printed format was focusing on Ellie instead of the ensemble of characters in the novel).
Those that watch "Contact" may scratch their heads to the ambiguous ending, but if you view the film in terms of Ellie's search for her own personal God, then there is closure in "Contact" and the conclusion does have substance.
The 'couch potato' narrative style, last seen in "Volcano", is also found in "Contact", with the entire reporting staff of CNN in a series of cameos as videobites from news broadcasts propel the story along.

"Contact" Film Review by Larry Klaes
While Contact was certainly not your typical film dealing with humanity's encounter with extraterrestrials, the advertisements for it may not have entirely gotten the message across.
As for first contact with ETI, almost invariably a disk-shaped spaceship hovering over a city or extinct volcano core is the first Hollywood sign of their existence.
The Contact scenes where the transmission begins with prime numbers to show that the signal is artificial in nature is both logical and realistic.

Dr. Daniel's Movie Emergency - Contact - Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, John Hurt
Contact poses the age-old question, "Is there intelligent life out there?" and adds a new and better question to the mix, that being, "What would happen if we found out there was?" Jodie Foster plays Ellie Arroway, an astronomer and lifelong believer in E.T. and his gang.
She displays the eyes of a dreamer throughout this movie, someone who's seeing her dreams come true.

National Review: Contact. - movie reviews
Contact is science fiction based on a novel by Carl Sagan, no less.
The movie affords her a spectacularly spotty romance with Matthew McConaughey, Hollywood's latest heartthrob, who plays Palmer Joss (some moniker!), a singularly precocious religious advisor to the President -- Clinton, not Marshall.
Contact's technology and space-tripping is awesomely designed and shot, but the screenplay by James V. Hart and Michael Goldenberg is somewhat plodding, perhaps to confirm the film's contention that human intelligence is less advanced than that of the Vegans.

The movie (and the book) in a not so subtle way, demonstrates that science and traditional religion (read orthodox Christianity) are at loggerheads and cannot compromise.
Nevertheless, the purpose of the movie is to show that science and a certain kind of religion can coexist, and that there is a kind of faith that is common to both.
In the movie, this redemption is even an act of grace in that the highly intelligent aliens seek out inferior and backward humans and present them with plans to travel to the heavens!

 Definition of Contact (movie)
The plot in the movie is quite loosely based in the novel, and some key characters and events have been added, removed or modified.
Ellie Arroway, the daughter of Ted Arroway (Ted's wife died giving birth to Ellie, and he dies during the film), is a brilliant scientist that has longed for searching for extraterrestrial intelligence since her childhood (then played by Jena Malone), when she used her Amateur Radio to listen for radio signals.
The film, in effect, covers the transition of an atheistic scientist who refuses to believe in anything without scientific evidence, to a person who ends up trying to make the world believe in what she calls her faith.

`Contact' is a fresh story, and is particularly great for those who enjoy their sci-fi light : science fiction movies that don't require laser guns and spaceships, etc. Its subject is thought provoking, its characters are memorable and well portrayed, and its overall presentation is top-notch.
The movie's climax (Ellie's final destination) is not only satisfying, but also intentionally ambiguous, forcing the viewer to think about what they have just seen, and where she might actually have been.

The opening and closing moments of Robert (Forrest Gump) Zemeckis's Contact astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these days--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life.
The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye.
