It is a Cold War era novel that parlays the nuclear paranoia of the time into exquisitely wrought tension among the various countries involved.
CONTACT is a novel about the global reception of a message from space.
While CONTACT starts out on a firm scientific basis that is gripping and well written, I found the novel as a whole to be disappointing.

  Contact electrification by cavity QED
Contact charging of insulators by the transfer of electrons from the metal occurs if the Fermi level of the metal is higher than the bottom of the conduction band of the insulator.
Contact electrification in the interface between metals and insulators is similar to the nucleation and collapse of bubbles in water, in that both the interface and bubble form high frequency QED cavities.
Nucleation and collapse of bubbles in water is discussed in Appendix A. In contact electrification, inhibited EM radiation from atoms in the interface is compensated by an increase in the Planck energy that by the photoelectric effect produces electrons in the metal and insulator surfaces.

Contact (novel) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contact is a science fiction novel written by Carl Sagan and published in 1985.
Some of Sagan's character traits are evident in the main (female) character, Ellie Arroway, and the novel serves as an entertaining platform in which he encapsulates ideas surrounding many of his life's interests, especially the first contact with extraterrestrials.
However, this position is in direct conflict with the vast body of Sagan's views as represented in his work and writings (such as 'The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark') which are skeptical about claims of supernatural origins of the cosmos and favor explanations of a naturalistic origin.

 (Design) The Sensing Contact Lens
A novel contact lens with embedded sensors is being developed for continuous monitoring of the intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients.
The method chosen for measuring the evolution of the IOP in the sensing contact lens is indirect and correlates the spherical deformation of the eyeball with the changes in IOP.
The sterilised sensing contact lens was positioned on the patients’ eyes by an ophthalmologist so that the wire from which the signal was recorded did not cause any major discomfort to the patients (Figure 3) and did not affect eye movement.

It was also reported that Novel worked with the Cuban Revolutionary Front during the Bay of Pigs operation via the CIA proprietary, the Evergreen Advertising Agency.
Subsequently, Novel had sold the photograph to Walter Sheridan of N.B.C. I discussed this unusual case with the D.A. of Houma, and he insisted that as far as his jurisdiction was concerned, the removal of the munitions from the Schlumberger bunker had been a burglary.
However, before I could question Novel about this latest adventure involving Guy Banister and his personal war against Cuba, Novel picked up word that I was looking for him (probably from one of the half dozen CIA men I had naively embraced as associates) and hit the road.

Contact: A Eulogy to Carl Sagan
Contact is a must-see film for those who wish to comprehend and knowingly confront our culture's hostility towards faith that relies on revelation.
If they have the technology to purposefully contact us, and this is something we cannot do, then their technology must be beyond ours.
Though clearly an enemy of the faith, the closing sentences of the novel Contact indicated a belief, a hope, in an intelligence that antedates the universe.

She contacts a fellow shortwave radio enthusiast and finds that he is in California, a thousand miles from her home.

A novel cargo cult was imported from New Guinea into Australia; it preached the construction of crude radio telescope replicas to attract extraterrestrial largesse.

Numerous real celestial objects, such as the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) with its incredible fl pillars of star-forming gas and dust (image courtesy of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)), were seen in all their glory as we passed them by, though naturally at speeds far beyond those achievable in reality.
