Contact breaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The purpose of the contact breaker is to interrupt the current flowing in the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
The contact breaker is operated by an engine-driven cam, and the position of the contact breaker is set so that they open (and hence generate a spark) at the exactly correct moment needed to ignite the fuel at the top of the piston's compression stroke.
The contact breaker is usually mounted on a plate that is able to rotate relative to the camshaft operating it.

The contact angle or dwell time (the amount of time the contacts are closed) remains very important in this system, because the amplifier does not change the timing, it only amplifies breaker point pulses.
The current through the contact breaker points is kept to a certain level (not close to zero).
The distributor contains contact breaker point, a capacitor, a vacuum advance, a centrifugal advance, contacts for the electronic ignition and a shaft with lobs that is connected (through a gear) with the crankshaft.

Combined device for on-load breaking and visible isolation of an electric circuit - Patent 4596911
This prohibition is due to the fact that the material opening of a contact circuit for breaking the current does not guard against the loss of insulation due to pollution of the insulators of the contact circuit by the electric arc which occurs at the moment of breaking.
These two contact knives 7, 8 extend inside case 10 in the plane of blade 2, as far as the passage zone of jaws 4, 5 and they are further connected to respective current leadins 9, 9' passing through the walls of case 10.
Thus, during closure of the contact, the contact knife 7, 8 is forcibly inserted between the two plates 12, 13 and moves them apart under the action of the resilient clip 14, which then provides the contact force in the closed state.

 Battery Applications
Consequently, the primary circuit is formed by the primary coil, ignition switch and contact breakers and the secondary circuit is formed by the secondary winding, distributor and spark plugs.
The contact breakers break the current flow in the primary circuit so that voltage is induced in the secondary winding of the ignition coil.
The contact surfaces of breaker points are made of conductible metal that continue in a strip of spring steel.

Conventional contact breakers in our MG distributors start to deteriorate immediately after fitting and require changing at approximately six thousand mile intervals, by which time they are usually worn out.
Lumenition has developed three systems, all of which replace the standard contact breaker and condenser with electrical triggering devices with no touching parts so that wear is impossible.
The photo shows the standard contact breaker and condenser, both of which should be removed along with the rotor arm.
