Contact print - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contact prints are used to produce proof sheets from entire rolls of 35mm negative (from 135 film cassettes), and 120 (2 1/4 film rolls, to aid in the selection of images for further enlargement, and to aid in cataloging and identification.
In medium and Large_format photography, contact prints are prized for their extreme fidelity to the negative, with exquisite detail that may be seen with the use of a magnifying glass.
Contact printing was also used at one time in photolithography and in printed circuit manufacturing.

Printing meets lithography: Soft approaches to high-resolution patterning
Offset printing was used for the fabrication of capacitors [7] and printed and plated metal lines as narrow as 25 µm [8].
Printing speeds varied between 0.1 and 10 mm/s, and applied forces were adjusted between 0.5 and 10 N. The width of the contact zone between the stamp and the substrate was approximately 2 mm, leading to maximum pressures of 40 kPa.
During a printing step, an ink may be transferred to the substrate (additive print) or removed from the substrate (subtractive print), the chemical nature of the substrate may be altered in the zones of contact (convertive print), or the substrate itself may be selectively removed (etching).

 Printing
A contact print is one made by placing the negative in direct contact with the printing paper.
Contact prints can be made with a printing frame, which resembles a picture frame with glass.
If the print is too small or too large the light house is moved up or down to change the size and the image is refocused.Once the size is set the lens is closed down 4 clicks from full brightness to an aperture of f 11 to allow for a longer exposure time.

 Light Sources for Contact Printing
The printing characteristics of the Actinic tube are quite similar, both in speed and contrast, to the BL tube.
As for sharpness, when making small prints where it was possible to maintain very good contact between the exposing negative and printing paper during printing I could see no difference in sharpness, regardless of whether the exposure was made in a contact printing frame or with a vacuum easel.
This lack of close contact leads to a greater scattering of the light (and loss of sharpness) with a diffuse printing source — where many of the lights rays pass through the negative at very low angles — than with a semi-collimated unit — where the rays pass through the negative at relatively high angles.

One of the benefits of a contact print is the sharpness that comes from having the paper tight against the negative.
The color of the print is determined by the pigment use -- in those two cases it was a mixutre of lampfl watercolour paint (in tubes) and Sumi ink.

In contact printing, the substrate is brought into physical contact with the glass photomask.

The proximity exposure method is similar to contact printing except that a small gap, 10 to 25 microns wide, is maintained between the substrate and the mask during exposure.

Also, I suspect prints often look better (i.e., no abrupt increases or decreases in gradation in some area of the scale) although this is clearly a personal, aesthetic issue.
The print reflection densities were read off a Macbeth densitometer - I didn't have the calibration plaque, so I zeroed it off the base white of the paper and went from there.
So one could try compensating for mild print underexposure with extended development, although the tone tends to drift towards the cold end of things and other aesthetic reasons typically dictate an avoidance of long development times.

'Off Contact' Screen Printing - Plastics, Metals, etc. [IS08]
After your squeegee passes over the design area, and the ink is printed onto your item, the screen 'snaps' back upwards and the ink is left sitting on top of the item.
Printing 'off contact' is an advanced application, however with the right equipment the task is made very simple and actually no harder than fabric printing.
Hint: After you have printed off contact a few times, judging the height is very fast, however if you are a beginner don't stress out, just try a few 'dry' prints with your squeegee first to check the height.

 Contact Negatives
Most of the shortcomings of the ink jet printer are overcome by printing a negative rather than a positive.
The results are repeatable - all of the "dodging and burning" being done before the negative is made, and the final print shares the visual and archival traits associated with fine silver printing.
I find it much easier to compare a print with a print, rather than a print with an image on a computer monitor, and have chosen an ink jet print as final proof of expressive quality.
