Contax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contax is a camera brand noted for its unique, and sometimes odd, technical innovation and a wide range of Carl Zeiss lenses.
The Contax brand finds its origin in a series of pre-war Zeiss-Ikon rangefinder cameras that were the main competitor to the Leica.
Contax does sell an adapter that allows lenses from their 645 medium format system to be used on N bodies.

 PSPCS: The Magnificent Post-War Contax
While the Contax never attained the performance levels of the Leica, their later cameras are reliable and gorgeous, with a variety of great optics available.
Zeiss-Ikon introduced the Contax I in the Spring of 1932 and was in direct competition with the Leica first introduced in 1925.
Early West German Contax lenses are marked "Opton." Later West German lenses are marked "Carl Zeiss" without "Jena" or "Opton." West German lenses are found with a variety of mounts with the majority of late lenses found in light alloy mounts.

 Zeiss Contax II and III
A good argument can be made the Contax III was the world's first modern 35mm camera, as it was the first 35mm system with a built in camera exposure meter.
Contax combined the shutter speed dial with the advance knob, enabling the photog to change speeds before or after the camera had been wound.
The Contax II was reborn as various Russian "Kiev." Lenses ran the range from 28 to 135 and were fully compatible with the Zeiss Contax II / III.

Contax 167MT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
All Contax cameras are sturdily built on an alloy chassis and have a very old-fashioned look and user interface; the basic 167MT body (no batteries, no film, no lens) is 620g (1.37 lbs.) and has a solid feel.
i own contax 139q body, and the only thngs that i i would like to have added to it are a 100% view-finder,multiple exposure feature, and a high eyepoint viewfinder for eyeglass wearers.of all the lenses tht i own of the zeiss line probably myfavorite is the 35mm 2,8.
The Contaxes, he told me, had their lens mounts broken with the bumps of field work and many suffered from shutters that forze up in the cold.

 Contax SLR overview
Canon has done it, Minolta has done it and yes, now Contax did it as well: a new lens mount that is incompatible to the "classic" Contax/Yashica mount.
The Contax N1 is based on the new "N"-mount which is exclusively capable to take true AF Carl-Zeiss lenses.
Obviously the new SLR cameras are also a very interesting option for Contax 645 users who can use their medium format AF lenses using a dedicated adapter which sustains both AF and aperture functionality.

Contax brand comes to an end?: Digital Photography Review
Contax joined forces with Yashica in the 1960s, which became part of the electronics giant Kyocera in the mid-1990s.
The history of the name goes back to the original Contax camera produced by Zeiss Ikon AG in 1932.
A dark cloud has been hanging over the Contax brand since Kyocera announced it was to end of camera production last month.

 Contax 137 MD Quartz
The Contax 137 MD Quartz is a nice little automatic-exposure SLR made by Yashica using the Contax marquee.
One of the things about the Contax SLRs that you have to get used to is that the shutter-speed dial is located on the left side of the body -- where the ISO film speed dial usually is on other SLRs.
At this point, most pros gave up and either kept their older Contax SLRs or went with the Canon or Nikon systems which were fully AF compatible (Canon having made that break over ten years ago).

Contax/Volga/Kiev   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The production of the Contax II and III was greatly curtailed starting in 1938 and during the war years with most all of the small number of cameras going for governmental purposes.
The swift construction of the Contax SLR suggests that the tool and die manufacturing facility in the old Wünsche (a pre-Zeiss Ikon and pre-Ica company) plant located in Reick on the outskirts of Dresden was not damaged or was able to be activated soon after the end of the war.
The SLR Contax was produced originally using the Zeiss Ikon logo and after the 1954 West German court verdict (where they lost the ability to use that trademark), they moved to the Ernemann tower logo with the letters ZI and later the ZI was dispensed with.

The Contax N Digital is the world's first digital SLR camera to employ a full-frame 35mm, 24 x 36mm, 6+ Mega Pixel CCD.
The new Contax N Digital will be able take advantage of the impressive lens line from the N system, which includes a total of seven lenses.
The option of using lenses from the Contax 645 system is especially important to 645 owners since they can utilize their current lenses with the N Digital with the simple addition of the NAM-1 adapter.

Zeiss Ikon Contax Cameras, Lenses and Photography
The Contax I is, along with the Leica II, the first 35m system camera with interchangeable, bayonet mounted lenses and Leica's first serious competitor.
For all the innovation in the Contax I, it suffered several recalls (Zeiss Ikon cared about its reputation) but this was the death knell for it.
Using the Contax takes a step back in time to how professional 35mm photography was done 45-60 years ago in the era before the 35mm SLR and TTL metering.

Since the Contax 645 AF is a focal plane shutter camera, you can only use flash or strobe up to 1/90th second (or up to 1/125th with their TLA strobe).
Contax offers an interesting vacuum back insert option for use with 220 rollfilm to achieve maximum film flatness and image sharpness.
Contax 645 stuff all comes from Kyocera, Japan, maybe with the exception of the rural optical design of the lenses which still maybe from Zeiss, Oberkochen.

MacDevCenter.com -- End of Shutter Lag? The Contax SL300R T* Might Be the Sign of Good Things to Come
In fact, Contax doesn't bother to include any media card with the camera (I guess there's no such thing as a high-speed 16MB card), so be sure to figure in one or two Ultras for the total price of this camera.
The Contax has faster startup time and definitely outperforms the Canon in burst mode (including not fling out the monitor as the Canon does during firing), but the shutter lag competition was a closer contest.
But the Contax is a better street shooter because you draw less attention with it by holding it at waist level or any other angle for that matter.

 Kiev 4A - a Contax rangefinder clone
After the War, Zeiss in West Germany did not have the equipment or dies to make new Contax II rangefinders since they were taken by the Russians, so working from scratch they came up with a totally new design in the Contax IIa which is smaller than the II series.
Parts and technology are not interchangeable between the Contax II and IIa or Kiev 4 and Contax IIa.
for their rangefinders, Nikon took Contax's bayonet mount and change the cam ratio a bit, so while Nikon rangefinder lenses will mount on a Contax/Kiev (and vice versa), you should be aware that there will be slight focusing inaccuracies with normal to long lenses (50mm~135mm) at full aperture.

In the pre-war Contax cameras the shutter tape is a directly participating shutter component that actively participates in the process of shutter speed.
The reason the Contaflex TLR and the Contax 1 are very sensitive to the tape used in them is due to the fragility of the shutter curtain latching mechanism used only in these two models.
Even if a Contax camera could be made to be perfect it would still be 1950's technology in the case of the IIa or IIIa, or 1930's technology in the case of the I, II and III.
