During the war, the battleship had no active missions, since it was impossible to meet the enemy: the exercitations took 966 hours, compared to 40 hours spent in 3 war actions.
Conte di Cavour was returned to Regia Marina on 1 June 1937; it was in Taranto at the beginning of the World War II, on 10 June 1940.
During the night of Taranto, 11–12 November 1940, Conte di Cavour was seriously damaged by a torped dropped by a british aircraft during the attack to the naval base of Taranto: the ship was recovered at the end of 1941, and then sent to Trieste to be repaired, but it never returned to active duty.

Giulio Cesare was an Italian Conte di Cavour-class battleship that served in the Regia Marina in both World Wars before joining the Soviet Navy.
As the Novorossiysk, she was a battleship of the Soviet Navy, which sank in 1955 with the loss of 608 lives, one of the worst maritime disasters after World War II.
Novorossiysk was originally the Italian battleship Giulio Cesare and on 3 February 1949 at Vlorë she was ceded to the Soviet Union as war reparations.

 Dreadnoughts: U.S. Battleships
The reason for this was the Washington Treaty of 1921, which restricted the tonnage of total battleships a nation was allowed to possess (forcing Great Britian to scrap several of it's ships) and disallowed construction of battleships at all.
Following this class was the South Dakota class, of the same tonnage as the North Carolinas, but was of a smaller length, allowing for the reduced weight be used for extended armor.
This class had the same armament as the earlier fast battleships, nine 406mm guns, but of a newer and better model, and was able to go up to 33 (!) knots.

The five (soon six) Italian battleships suddenly became a very serious threat and it was the Royal Navy this time that might have had doubts before engaging such a force.
That was because several of the estimated 15,000 rounds of all calibers fired by shore and warship anti-aircraft defenses had landed on the merchantmen and even in the city, causing severe damage.

The second “Standard Type” battleship design was the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38)--a.k.a “Battleship 1913 and Battleship 1914”--which actually represented a development of a scheme considered for “Battleship 1912.” The Pennsylvania sported four triple, single sleeve turrets, vice Nevada’s two triples and two twins.

The Caracciolo class of battleships were neverbuilt.  Work on them were suspended in 1916, in order to concentrate on building destroyers, submarines, and other light craft.  Work on them resumed in 1919, but was stopped once again in 1920.  They were all scrapped by 1922.

Along with the two surviving Conte di Cavour's (Leonardo da Vinci was blown up by Austrian saboteurs at Taranto on 2 August 1916 and, although salved upside down, was never put back into service), the Doria's were drastically rebuilt during the 1930s.
Although I would consider this class and the preceding class to be handsome vessels, they were transformed from ugly ducklings to swans during their 1930's rebuilds.
All in all, I would consider Andrea Doria's to be a lucky class, they did not suffer the fates of their near sisters the Conte di Cavour's.
