		Hearing the rough-edged live debut of Engine Room in New York last month, as part of a Columbia Records showcase during the annual convention of the magazine College Music Journal, I was struck mostly by the former.
		Contemplating the Engine Room is the kind of work rarely found in rock anymore.

		Although I'd heard work by the both the groups he'd been in and a bit of his solo work (including the aforementioned album in which he works with tons of famous artist), I'd never really sat down and listened to much of the work that Mike Watt had a hand in.
		The first track "In The Engine Room" starts out with a rumble of bass before it drops off to nothing but Watt singing a cappella.
		I'm not sure what it is about the ocean that inspires such great albums (see Ocean Songs by the Dirty Three or The Sea And The Bells by the Rachels also), but Watt has managed to create something touching, funny, and altogether interesting with the concept of Contemplating The Engine Room.

		Some of the more experimental songs work very well, though I deduct one star because the last couple of songs are not compelling at all.
