The Contemporary English Version (New Testament, 1991, full Bible, 1995) "was begun in 1984 by the American Bible Society.
Millions and millions of readers have adopted the New International Version as their 'Bible.' Since 1987 it has outsold the King James Version, the best-seller for centuries—a remarkable indication of its popularity and acceptance in the Christian community.
The New King James Version (1982) is a revision of the King James Version, called for primarily due to the same reasons given for the New Revised Standard Version.

The CEV project was apparently modelled after the process followed in missionary Bible translation projects undertaken by ABS employees in undeveloped countries, where simple draft translations (often based upon simple English versions like the CEV) are gradually improved by ABS consultants who compare the work with the original language texts.
The CEV is very careful to steer readers away from the "sexist" interpretations found in all English Bibles prior to their generation.
The CEV also makes an attempt to tone down the anti-Judaism of the New Testament by avoiding the word "Jews" wherever it is used in reference to opponents of Jesus.

In the mid-1980s, Newman began to study popular forms of the English language found in books, magazines, newspapers, and television to see what kind of language people were speaking and hearing.
As in Today's English Version, the CEV replaces complex theological language with simple phrases that express the same theological truth but in a much clearer fashion.
For the most part, the CEV accomplishes its goal of offering a readable modern language translation of the Bible that is free of theological jargon.

 Apostate Café: Bible Versions
English Bible translations are classified by two factors: the principles of translation, and source texts utilized.
Imagine how someone, who does not speak English, would interpret phrases such as "bury the hatchet" or "piece of cake" or "under the weather." The same thing can occur with the Bible, which was written by a different culture, in a different time.
The French version was praised as being "one of the greatest achievements of renascent Catholic biblical scholarship" because of the abundance of footnotes and introductions.

The economic use of the English language is a triumph.
Here the CEV sets birth by water against birth by the spirit and yet in Greek they can only be taken together since a single preposition governs the phrase.

 The King James Version
Defenders of the primacy of the KJV were very vocal in their opposition to the new Greek text and the new English versions which followed its publication.
Thus, a discussion of the King James/modern version debate is useful with a focus on the New Testament, for that is where the main concerns lie.
In the KJV the two versions are almost identical, while in the NIV the prayer in Luke 11 is significantly shorter than that in Matthew 6.

The Contemporary English Version combines readability with accuracy in a thoroughly up-to-date Bible, accessible for all and particularly suitable for anyone new to Christianity or just wanting to experience the life and vigour of the Bible's message in a new way.
The CEV is used by Scripture Union, Bible Society, Scripture Gift Mission and Bible Reading Fellowship for notes and other materials, and as such is the most widely adopted of the new Bible translations.
The text is simplified (but not patronisingly so) and tricky passages are written in such a way that the message is plain for all to see, without being so paraphrased you’re not sure where the original verse ends and the scholars opinion begins.

The closest possible referent (which is what English speakers typically determine to be the antecedent of a pronoun) is "the righteous" in the preceding sentence (end of verse 23), but I don't think verse 23 is referring to casting down the righteous into the pit of destruction.
I would think that the biblical scholars who work on English translations would surely have at least as much exegetical knowledge of the translation options for a phrase like ex ergon nomou as the clergy would, who, with the current literal translation are expected to explain the meaning of the phrase to the laity.
I have often noted that some Christians attempt to 'use' their version as an aid in their disagreements with others instead of allowing a translation to be a translation and engaging others based on a hermeneutical paradigm rather than just falling back on a particular translated text.

The C.E.V. completely alters the great testimony of the verse to our Lord’s Deity and Advent.  Notice the Lord is the messenger of the covenant and He has come to His temple according to the faithful A.V. rendering.
According to the C.E.V. the Lord and the Messenger are not one and the same person.  Here we have the confusion of error.
The C.E.V. rends instead of rendering the text and instead of Christ being ‘over all God blessed for ever’ the later part of the text is taken to be a doxology having no reference to the Deity of the Son of God whatsoever.
