Afro-Cuban jazz is a combination of jazz improvising and rhythms from Cuba and Africa; it is also known as Latin Jazz although several of its practioners prefer the former term.
Contemporary funk refers to a kind of jazz from the 1970s and 1980s in which accompanists perform in the Black pop style of soul and funk music while extensive solo improvisations ride atop.

Other bands that are really doing something different are the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra (particularly on the Monopoly Game album), the Dave O'Higgins Biggish Band (a british sax player who's played with many different artists) and the Matthew Herbert Big Band.
I missed seeing them live at Jazz Britannia but saw their set on television and it was very impressive.
