CDN (Content delivery network) | NetworkWorld.com Community
Content delivery networks (CDN) deliver Web-based content from geographically dispersed servers that sit on the edge of various networks and deliver content according to the proximity of the Web surfer.
CDNs typically sit on ISP networks, where traffic to each server is limited only by the capacity of that network's bandwidth, and overflow traffic is routed among the CDN's servers.
As a result, CDN users don't have to worry about increasing bandwidth or hardware to handle spikes in traffic; all that is done automatically by the CDN that determines which server is best able to handle the load.

Content Delivery - Authoritative Buyer's Guide
The goal of CDN is to push content as close to the user as possible; to minimise content latency (the time it takes the requesting device to receive a response) and jitter (unpredictable, large fluctuations in latency) and to minimise available bandwidth speed.
Network delivery costs are proportional to the total network bandwidth, and server costs are proportional to total concurrent server bandwidth, since increased server resources are needed to sustain higher bandwidths.
The goal of CDN is to push content as close to the user as possible to minimise content latency (the time it takes the requesting device to receive a response) and jitter (unpredictable, large fluctuations in latency) and to maximise available bandwidth speed.

What is content delivery network? - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: CDN, content replication
A content delivery network (CDN) is an interconnected system of computers on the Internet that provides Web content rapidly to numerous users by duplicating the content on multiple servers and directing the content to users based on proximity.
CDNs are used by Internet service providers (ISPs) to deliver static or dynamic Web pages but the technology is especially well suited to streaming audio, video, and Internet television (IPTV) programming.
Another advantage of CDN technology is content redundancy that provides a fail-safe feature and allows for graceful degradation in the event of damage to, or malfunction of, a part of the Internet.

Content Delivery Network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a term coined in the late 1990s to describe a system of computers networked together across the Internet that cooperate transparently to deliver content (especially large media content) to end users.
Content Delivery Networks augment the end-to end transport network by distributing on it a variety of intelligent applications employing techniques designed to optimize content delivery.
A content cluster or service node can be formed using a layer 4–7 switch to balance load across a number of servers or a number or web caches within the network.

Your content is cached on servers spread over 17 cities and 2 continents worldwide to ensure it is available in closer geographic proximity to your customers.
The CDN is a caching system that directs your customers to the nearest caching server (or node).
As the customer accesses your web site, they retrieve content from the node instead of the origin server, reducing the load on that server and allowing for much faster delivery of the content.

In a narrower sense, it's what can be done to impact delivery of mission-critical content—video, audio, data or text—and guarantee that it gets from its source to its destination in a timely fashion.

SSRN-Service Adoption and Pricing of Content Delivery Network (CDN) Services by Kartik Hosanagar, John Chuang, Ramayya ...
Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) are a vital component of the Internet's content delivery value chain, servicing nearly a third of the Internet's most popular content sites.
However, when different content providers have varying traffic burstiness, as expected in reality, CDNs should provide relatively lower volume discounts, leading to convex price functions in some cases.
Surprisingly, we also find that content providers with bursty traffic provision less infrastructure compared to those with lower burstiness, that CDNs are able to charge more in the presence of bursty traffic, and that content providers with bursty traffic realize lower surplus.
