Topic: Content validity

Validity (statistics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A common approach, called criterion validity, is to correlate measures with a criterion measure known to be valid.
Content validity, or face validity, is simply a demonstration that the items of a test are drawn from the domain being measured; it does not guarantee that the test actually measures phenomena in that domain.
According to classical test theory, predictive or concurrent validity cannot exceed the square of the correlation between two versions of the same measure -- that is, validity cannot exceed reliability.

Content validity and its estimation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Thus, content validity of an instrument depends on the adequacy of a specified domain of content that is sampled (2).
Content validity is a subjective judgment of experts about the degree of relevant construct in an assessment instrument.
Content validity is an important factor in identifying the concept of measuring; however, it is not a sufficient indication that the instrument actually measures what is that intended to measure.

Because validity technically has to do with the appropriateness of the inference made from the assessment data, validity is not a characteristic which can be directly associated with a test.
Thus when a test appears to have satisfactory content validity (to be defined shortly) what we really mean is that it appears likely that a valid inference regarding competence with this content can be made from the results of the test.
Content validity, however, is not the same as FACE validity.

 Reliability
Validity can be defined as the degree to which a test measures what it is supposed to measure.
In order to establish the content validity of a measuring instrument, the researcher must identify the overall content to be represented.
One of the easiest ways to test for criterion-related validity is to administer the instrument to a group that is known to exhibit the trait to be measured.

Validity is the accuracy of a measurement of the true state of a phenomenon [32], while reliability measures the concordance, consistency or repeatability of outcomes [25].
Content validity is the extent to which a measure adequately and comprehensively measures what it claims to be measuring.
Ideally, content validity studies attempt to compare a test with a reference standard of the same phenomenon as that which is being palpated, i.e., palpable abnormalities in structure, motion and soft tissue.

The concepts of validity and reliability in the context of mental testing denote the extent to which tests measure what we intend for them to measure and whether the measurements we make with the tests are free from error.
Content validity is NOT established through statistical analysis, but rather through an appeal to reason and subjective judgment.
It is important to understand that the determination of content validity is more prone to error than other types of validity determinations because of its reliance on subjective judgments.

Thus, content validity is the consensus (i.e., intersubjective, negotiated) opinion of the community of scholars as to whether the items used to measure a construct refer to the domain of the construct and to no other construct.
In other words, the issue of content validity is, "Does the community of scholars agree that a particular instrument is appropriate to measure a particular physical entity or abstract construct?" Construct validity is the extent to which a measure relates to other measures consistent with theoretically derived hypotheses concerning the concepts being measured.
First, construct validity is assessed by examining the parameter estimates for the effects of the construct on the indicator items (i.e., is each item strongly correlated with the overall summated score, which we use as the measure of the construct).

Questions and answers about language testing statistics: What is construct validity?
To demonstrate content validity, testers investigate the degree to which a test is a representative sample of the content of whatever objectives or specifications the test was originally designed to measure.
For instance, if a group of testers were trying to develop a test for business English to be administered primarily in Japan and Korea, they might decide to administer their new test and the TOEIC to a fairly large group of students and then calculate the degree of correlation between the two tests.
To understand the traditional definition of construct validity, it is first necessary to understand what a construct is. A construct, or psychological construct as it is also called, is an attribute, proficiency, ability, or skill that happens in the human brain and is defined by established theories.

Definitions of content validity by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) and by the federal Uniform Guidelines are quoted at the beginning of the chapter by Goldstein and Zedeck.
The theme that unifies all of the content validity documentation requirements is that the user is expected to provide the detail and specificity needed to clearly relate the content of the test to the content of the job so that the "inferential leap" is very small.
The first consideration in deciding to use content validity evidence to support a job-relatedness claim is to apply the "same as" criterion: the test content must be the same as the job domain or, for a knowledge test, the knowledge domain.

 Validity
Content validity is the extent to which an empirical measurement reflects a specific domain of content.
Construct validity takes into account the theoretical context of a measure, the bigger picture, or the extent to which a test is related to other measures consistent with the phenomenon being measured.
This kind of validity is especially useful when the thing being measured is very fuzzy or theoretical, and cannot be attached to a particular content (as described above) or outcome (as described above).

Content Validity is the extent to which a test adequately samples the domain of information, knowledge, or skill that it purports to measure.
Rather, establishing the content validity of a test is accomplished by teams of experts in the substantive area of the test.
Hence, content validity is usually established through a process rather than through a statistic.

In convergent validity, we examine the degree to which the operationalization is similar to (converges on) other operationalizations that it theoretically should be similar to.
Or, to show the convergent validity of a test of arithmetic skills, we might correlate the scores on our test with scores on other tests that purport to measure basic math ability, where high correlations would be evidence of convergent validity.
In discriminant validity, we examine the degree to which the operationalization is not similar to (diverges from) other operationalizations that it theoretically should be not be similar to.

Content validity refers to the degree that the contents of a test reflect the domain of contents of interest.
Discussion of the content validity of the test is most appropriate where there is a well defined body of knowledge or skill that can be sampled.
Content validity is not much use when there isn’t a clear relation between a sample of items and some well defined domain.

Content validity is very similar to face validity, except instead of asking your Mom or your target members of your population of interest, you must ask experts in the field (unless your Mom is an expert on attitude).
The theory behind content validity, as opposed to face validity, is that experts are aware of nuances in the construct that may be rare or elusive of which the layperson may not be aware.
For a discusson of validity issues in the field of industrial and organizational psychology, this link discusses in highly technical terms, issues relating to content validity in particular, that come up when trying to measure for promotion or hiring.

The measurement literature on validation of teacher certification tests, although limited (Schmitt and Borman, 1993), supports the need for content validation, particularly for tests like the NLBCT that are criterion-referenced tests of skills used in teacher certification (Shimberg, 1981).
Validity of criterion-referenced tests is widely discussed in the literature, but content validity is generally recommended as the primary validation of interest.
For teacher certification purposes, test content validation is generally determined through an investigation of practitioners who either report or demonstrate the skills tested while on the job.

To demonstrate the content validity of a selection procedure, a user should show that the behaviors demonstrated in the selection procedure are a representative sample of the behavior(s) of the job in question or that the selection procedure provides a representative sample of the work product of the job.
Thus, a content strategy is not appropriate for demonstrating the validity of selection procedures which purport to measure traits or constructs, such as intelligence, aptitude, personality, commonsense, judgment, leadership, and spatial ability.
Content validity is also not an appropriate strategy when the selection procedure involves knowledges, skills, or abilities which an employee will be expected to learn on the job.
