Continental Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Continental Europe, also referred to as mainland Europe or simply the Continent, is the continent of Europe, explicitly excluding European islands and peninsulae.
Notably, in British English and Hiberno-English usage, the term means Europe excluding the United Kingdom and Ireland.
In the British mind Continental Europe is foremost represented by the Benelux, Germany, Spain, Italy and especially France.

Continental philosophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Continental philosophy is a term used in Anglophone philosophy to designate one of two major "traditions" of modern Western philosophy.
It is so named to distinguish it from Anglo-American or analytic philosophy, because, at the time the distinction was first noted (in the mid-twentieth century), continental philosophy was the dominant style of philosophy in continental Europe, while analytical philosophy was the predominant style in the English-speaking world.
The distinction between continental and analytic philosophy is relatively recent, probably dating from the early twentieth century.

 USS Clueless - Europe's future
In most of Europe now, if a business hires a lot of people during a boom, they are at serious risk of being stuck with a huge workforce during a bust that they can't afford to pay and aren't permitted to lay off.
Unfortunately, Europe has also been far less successful than the United States at integrating immigrants into their societies and economies, and immigrants are more likely to land on the dole than they are to get jobs.
We can't discount the possibility that in fifty years the EU and most existing national governments in Europe will be gone, replaced by a new Fascist dictatorship, which among other things chooses to make the investment in a modern military and which hopes to use it in yet another round of world conquest.

Interbreeding: Analytical and/vs. Continental Philosophy Part I: An Introduction
The geographical designators are similarly inaccurate, since continental philosophy is today done more, in terms of quantity though probably not quality, in Anglo-America than in continental Europe, whence its name derives.
Despite the problematic nomenclature, analytical and continental philosophy still represent two highly divergent systems of thought, which of course have plenty of divisions within them, but are still cohesive disciplines with relatively little, though some, traffic between them.
In any case, this is the lineage recognised in continental philosophy, essentially a pantheon of thinkers in the Germano-French tradition outlined, but which now includes a few homegrown offshoots, minor figures such as Judith Butler, whose work is still largely parasitic on the great European thinkers.

There was a time when people thought the idea of good rock and roll coming from Europe was pretty funny.
There's nothing for those people to laugh about any more, because in the mid 80s Europe was smitten by guitar band frenzy, and with a few pioneering bands to lead the way they took off on their own rock and roll trip.
Now there are good bands in nearly every country in Europe, and the European fans often seem far more aware of what's going on than their more complacent counterparts here in the States!
