Mark I: The Mark I was made from 1939 through 1948, with the exception, of course, of the war years.
The first Continental was the Mark I, done at first as a styling excersise By Edsel Ford, and to be used by him on his winters in Fla. He told the engineers it had to look "Continental", hence the name.
Engineers at Ford thought that the '58-'60 Marks were not at all deserving of the "Mark" name, thus the number rollback to Mark III.

The Mark II was powered by a more or less factory blueprinted (the parts were hand selected from production runs) Lincoln V-8 engine with 368 cubic inches.

The beltline was edged with full-lenght bright moldings, as divided grille appeared (recalling 1955-56), and the freestanding headlamps gave way to integral units within the grille.
One Exner touch remained, however: the simulated trunklid spare, though it was also squarish now, carried down into the bumper as on the 1956-57 Continental Mark II.
