Some of Continental Micronesia's Saipan employees who face layoffs because of the airline's shrunken business on the island face the prospect of finding other jobs with the airline on Guam or in Houston, Texas, an airline official said yesterday.
Continental Micronesia has 155 employees based in Saipan, and by the end of the downsizing, a process that begins Oct. 4, the regional airline will be left with 35 Saipan-based employees, said Wally Dias, staff vice president for sales and promotions at Continental.
Continental Micronesia jobs in Saipan will shrink from 155 to 35 in January under a gradual downsizing process that begins when Japan Airlines leaves Saipan Oct. 4.

Continental Micronesia continues to scale back its operations in Asia because of the economic crisis there.
Tuesday, the Continental Airlines subsidiary announced it will retire its four 426-seat 747 aircraft in April 1999 and replace them with 312-seat DC-10-30s.
