  InsightCentral.net - Encyclopedia - Honda Insight CVT
Note that while the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius both offer CVT transmissions that both provide stepless acceleration and a continuous range of motor speed to vehicle speed ratios, the Prius CVT (called 'ECVT' by Toyota) system is mechanically entirely different.
The CVT transmission used in the Insight is very similar to the CVT transmission that Honda has used in other vehicles, including the Civic HX in the United States, and the Honda Logo in Europe and Japan.
The CVT transmission consists of an oil-pressure variable input (aka "driving") and output (aka "driven") pulley, and a metal belt that connects the two.

TechnoFile looks at Continuously Variable Transmissions
Continuously Variable Transmissions are said to offer the efficiency and economy of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, supposedly promising the best of both worlds.
One situation in which the CVT comes in handiest is on long uphill sections of highway, where traditional transmissions “hunt and peck” for the proper gear; a CVT doesn't care what the proper gear should be.
The CVT can be a tad disconcerting to the newcomer, however, because with even the most sophisticated conventional automatic transmission you can feel a bit of a lurch when it shifts, while a CVT just keeps on a-chuggin' until the driver eventually backs off on the gas.

 CVT Enters the Mainstream
CVT's promise, both as a boon to fuel economy and as a low-cost alternative to conventional transmissions, has prompted us to revisit the topic.
Since our article CVT For You and Me appeared, a number of automakers have brought new CVT-equipped vehicles to market, and more are on the way.
Essentially, a CVT transmission operates by varying the working diameters of the two main pulleys in the transmission.

Continuously Variable Transmission | Motorcars & Automobiles   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that can change the "gear ratio" (gears are not generally involved) to any arbitrary setting within the limits.
The CVT is not constrained to a small number of gear ratios, such as the 4 to 6 forward ratios in typical automotive transmissions.
Although sold as a CVT it is in fact not such a device as the gear ratios are fixed and the transmission is actually a torque blending device, allowing either the electric motor or the ICE (internal combustion engine) or both to propel the vehicle.

CVTs have much smoother operation than hydraulic automatic transmissions, are simpler to build and repair and provide better fuel economy by avoiding torque converter losses.
CVT transmissions have been refined over the years and are much improved from their origins.

 Continuously variable transmission
A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that varies the distance between a pair of belt or chain-linked pulleys, wheels or coness to smoothly alter its gear ratio without requiring any predefined steps or sudden changes in engine speed.
Continuously variable transmissions operate on the theory of pulleys; a large pulley connected to a smaller pulley with a belt or chain will operate in the same manner as a large gear meshing with a smaller gear.
Typical CVTs have two opposing, cone shaped drums in them (one on the input, one on the output side) which can be moved in and out, controlled by the engine vacuum in the inlet manifold and engine RPM and centrifugal force acting on weights inside the conical drums.

murmini - MINI Cooper Blog : Continuously Variable Transmission
What is interesting about the CVT gearbox is the principle that it employs and the adaptability that it brings to a city-style car where pure performance driving is competing with the prospect of continuous city stop/go motoring.
The CVT approach is achieved by two shafts, one connected to the engine and one connected to the differential and subsequently the wheels.
The CVT transmission in the MINI is manufactured by ZF in Belgium and will cease to be offered in the MINIs after the end of this year.

Continuously variable transmission - Patent 7112158
In such transmissions, the traction rollers are mounted on support structures which, when pivoted, cause the engagement of traction rollers with the torque discs in circles of varying diameters depending on the desired transmission ratio.
For example, the transmission may be used in (i) a motorized vehicle such as an automobile, motorcycle, or watercraft, (ii) a non-motorized vehicle such as a bicycle, tricycle, scooter, exercise equipment or (iii) industrial equipment, such as a drill press, power generating equipment, or textile mill.
As the transmission 100 is shifted to a lower or higher gear by changing the rotational axes of the power adjusters 1a, 1b, 1c, each pair of spindle rollers 4a f, located on a single spindle 3a, 3b, 3c, moves in opposite directions along their corresponding grooves 6a f.

 Automatic transmission at AllExperts
The predominant form of automatic transmission is hydraulically operated, using a fluid coupling or torque converter and a set of planetary gearsets to provide a range of torque multiplication.
In this system, the transmission has fixed gears, but the ratio of wheel-speed to engine-speed can be continuously varied by controlling the speed of the third input to a differential using an electric motor-generator.
On older transmissions, this was accomplished by a mechanical lockout in the transmission valve body preventing an upshift until the lockout was disengaged; on computer- controlled transmissions, the same effect is accomplished electronically.

 Biaxial Idler
This biaxial idler is useful in continuously variable transmissions, because it provides a simple and rugged method of transmitting torque continuously across a wide range of varying transmission ratios while suffering minimal frictive losses and wear.
The toric continuously variable transmission, when equipped with a uniaxial idler, shifts only with the help of relatively complex machinery that inclines the idler and steers it across the transmission's driving and driven members as they rotate.

How does the clutch system work? - Gates Snowmobile & ATV Belts
Unlike an automotive transmission system, the belt and pulley mechanism on a snowmobile serves as both the clutch and the gear system.
Various springs with different rates and lengths determine the pretension and can be used to change the engagement rpm and "refine" the shifting characteristics.
This transition toward a high ratio will continue until the drive is fully upshifted or the next uphill condition is encountered and the power requirement goes up.

 Continuously Variable Transmission - Wikicars
The CVT is not constrained to a small number of gear ratios, such as the 4 to 6 forward ratios in typical automotive transmissions.
However, in the light-weight VDP transmissions used in automatic motorscooters and light motorcycles, the change in pulley diameter is accomplished by a variator, an all-mechanical system that uses weights and springs to change the pulley diameters as a function of belt speed.
CVT torque handling capability is limited by the strength of their belt or chain, and by their ability to withstand friction wear between torque source and transmission medium for friction-driven CVTs.

 Audi multitronic
For example, Audi's technical specialists have modified the variator of the continuously variable transmission by adopting a new transmission element known as the link-plate chain, to handle the high forces and torques that are developed constantly by the six-cylinder engine with a peak torque of 280 Newton-metres.
The new variator, with its spread of ratios reaching 6, surpasses all previous types of automatic transmission in respect of the highest and lowest ratio that is possible.
With an ingenious dual-piston principle on the variator and the separation of the oil flow into high-pressure and cooling circuits, the hydraulic system has in addition been designed in such a way that the pump output is significantly lower than that of a conventional arrangement.

 Notes on Continuously Variable Transmissions
Continuously Variable Transmissions are transmissions that provide an uninterrupted range of speed ratios, unlike a normal transmission that provides only a few discrete ratios.
The most common type of CVT is the frictional type, in which two bodies are brought into contact at points of varying distance from their axes of rotation, and allowing friction to transfer motion from one body to the other.
The simplest CVT seems to be the "disk and wheel" design, in which a wheel rides upon the surface of a rotating disk; the wheel may be slid along it's splined axle to contact the disk at different distances from it's center.
