Game Studies 0101: Eskelinen: The Gaming Situation
In discussing computer games we should take into account the unique dual materiality of cybernetic sign production (see Aarseth 1997, 40), and the resulting difference between strings of signs as they exist in the game (textonic game elements) and strings of signs as they are presented to the player (scriptonic game elements).
Consequently, both the number of game elements and the relations between them can be different in specific ways that are typical of (computer) games and only of them, and don't have to respect any conventions and traditional boundaries inherited from oral or written narratives, drama, theatre or films.
The dominant temporal relation in (computer) games is the one between user time (the actions of the player) and event time (the happenings of the game)(12), whereas in narratives it's between story time (the time of the events told) and discourse time (the time of the telling).

Continuum is the primary game client for the computer game SubSpace.
Continuum is a free SubSpace client developed by PriitK (Priit Kasesalu, who has also worked on the development of Kazaa and Skype) and Mr Ekted (Jim C).
Edit: Many attempts have now been made to hack the continuum client in the same way twister did, some are successful but the voltunteer staff in every zone have the power to remove these people from the game.

I Have No Words & I Must Design
Computer games are almost inherently solitaire, and to the degree they permit diplomacy with NPC computer opponents, they generally don't make it interesting.
I have to believe that the solitary nature of most computer games is a temporary aberration, a consequence of the technology, and that as networks spread and their bandwidth increases, the historical norm will reassert itself.
But, especially in solitaire computer games, it should be possible to ensure that every stage of the game involves a set of challenges, and that the player's job is done only at the end.

Given the power of today's personal computers, you'd think it would be easy to come up with an original game concept.
However, it is with great delight that this computerist reports stumbling upon a game so captivating and fresh that nothing short of a nuclear attack will stop me from playing it.
The game, which is played from first-person perspective, features 3-D graphics and animation so well implemented that if you're prone to motion sickness, you may want to keep a box of Dramamine next to your computer.

GameDev.net - Andrew Rollings and Ernest Adams on Game Design Chapter 7: Gameplay   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
In classical game theory, there are two broad classes of game: those of perfect information, with the complete state of play known to each player at all times, and those of imperfect information, with each player knowing only a fraction of the state of play (and not necessarily the same fraction for each player).
For example, chess is a game of perfect information because the player is at all times aware of the state of the board and the position of all the pieces—both his own and his opponent's.
In the limited context of a computer game, however, the cultural and universal morality levels are usually one and the same.

 Halfbakery: time travel computer game
A computer game (single-player or multi-player), probably some kind of real-time strategy game, which allows players to travel in game-time to tweak the past and influence the future.
Obviously, the computer won't be able to exactly "do what you would have done", and a large part of the game may be trying to play in such a way that the computer is able to grok your intent and "do the right thing" under variable circumstances.
Basically, the computer records how the game is going, and one of your possible moves, on your turn, is to branch that history at some point, creating a parallel game, possibly with some of your present guys inside it (even without your guys, it might be profitable).

Good Deal Games - Classic Videogame Games INTERVIEW - Rusel DeMaria and Johnny Wilson on Hi Score: The Illustrated ...
Some of the other books were more concerned about the cultural phenomenon of electronic games and properly saw console games as having more impact to more people because of their ease of use.
Rusel and I understood that you cannot comprehend the ebb and flow of computer and video game trends without seeing where the investments were coming from and the visions behind both the entrepreneurs who built the industry and the big business guys who almost killed it on several occasions.
I thought that early Atari-compatible game where Custer raped the Native American squaws was pretty odd, as was the adult-rated game where you had to seduce all of the alien women to get off the space ship.

It's definitely an action game, the visuals are solid (although a few years old at this point), and the play is engaging.
The premise of this point-and-click adventure game is actually fairly unique: players chat with characters in the game and psychically relive memories in order to solve a mystery.

Interesting that from this perspective, gaming has more in common with golf than it does with soccer, basketball, or cycling.
Perhaps in comparing gaming to golf on this continuum, it points out that gaming generally exists within the triangle, while golf actually exists outside of the continuum, where effort is actually a negative force on one's ability to play the game.
If a computer game pisses you off and you extend more effort, the same thing happens.

But let's face it-- after a while, those games get old, and some company eventually rehashes the same game with the same play style with better graphics and better gameplay.
EVERYONE who plays Continuum goes through a terribly frustrating learning curve and dies hundreds of times before they begin to understand how it all works.

Boing Boing: Game design primer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
In The Art of Computer Game Design, Chris Crawford contrasts what he call "games" with "puzzles." Puzzles are static; they present the "player" with a logic structure to be solved with the assistance of clues.
To be sure, Zork is not entirely static; the character moves from setting to setting, allowable actions vary by setting, and inventory changes with action.
Almost every game has some degree of puzzle-solving; even a pure military strategy game requires players to, e.g., solve the puzzle of making an optimum attack at this point with these units.

These games all have an engrossing story, and are all very long (which is in my opinion a strength for an RPG.) Not only that, but they have tons of items, bosses, and things to do.
Granted, these are the first or last games in their respectives series', but to me they represent the pinnacle of that particular series.
