Contra (arcade game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original game was ported as Gryzor to the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and Commodore 64 by Ocean Software for their release in Europe in 1988.
In the game, the character Bill is also a slightly transformed copy of Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Lance a slightly transformed copy of Sylvester Stallone.
Contra was not the first game to feature this famous code; it was actually the NES/Famicom port of Gradius, despite popular belief.

Contra is often well revered by the NES community, as many still call it one of their favorite games of all time.
The game is pretty tough, but by the fifth level (the arctic zone) the game goes a bit overboard with frustration.
In Contra instead of picking up falcon symbols the powerups were all different looking guns and you actually saw the different guns being held by the heroes.

UGO.com Games - The History of Contra Super Feature
It's probably tired trivia at this point, but the Contra name was born out of two Japanese kanji symbols on the side of the cabinet that were pronounced "kon" and "tra".
The arcade game was not all that different from the NES version that would follow.
Contra's place in video game history was cemented in February 1988 when a redesigned and expanded port of the arcade game was brought to the Nintendo Entertainment System.

This is not the beloved NES shooter that popularized the Konami code, but the less polished arcade game that preceded it.
Arcade Contra's stages are shorter than the NES game's, though they retain the same basic themes, as well as the classic tunes that the NES version has probably burnt into your mind.
Despite that, Contra Arcade is still a blast, albeit one with sluggish controls.

No, Contra can't hold a candle up to games in terms of graphics and sound, and the people who bash on the game for that are probably too young to remember Contra, or they're too busy being stuck in the 3D era that side scrollers are too "kiddish" for them.
Contra is not only one of the hardest games out there (as most 8-bit and 16-bit games are a lot harder than the 32-bit and over generation), it's one the greatest of the NES generation.
Contra is often cited (along with Mega Man and its sequel Super C) as being one of the hardest 8-bit games out there.

 The Contra HQ
The SNES port is fairly faithful to the arcade game, featuring all four characters and only limiting it to two simultaneous players.
The Treasure-developed Sin and Punishment probably has more in common with the likes of Panzer Dragoon than Contra, although the gameplay is similar to Cabal, the GI Arcade game, and the isometric levels of the original Contra game - you control a young group of warriors in a post-apolcalypitic world from a behind-the-back perspective.
Treasure's first game took the basic concept of Contra, added in bright cartoon graphics and an amazing weaponry system (where you make combinations of four base weapons for a monstrous arsenal of destruction) makes this one of the best Genesis games out there.

NES in the Arcade - Playchoice 10, Vs. Unisystem, Vs. Dualsystem
The Vs. System arcade machines are single unit game machines, with a modified version of the NES game the game being modified into a real arcade game.
These games are different from their NES or Playchoice counterparts, in that the games are ported over into real arcade games, and they play just like any other arcade games.
And unlike the Playchoice games, there is no timer that decides how long you play, in these games you play effects how long you can play etc. Therefore, these games differ a fair amount from the original NES games (though are still roughly the same in terms of the game itself).

A good PC conversion of Konami's hit arcade game of the same name, Contra is a Vietnam war platform game that features Rambo-style one-man commando against seeming the entire planet's enemy population, complete with colorful explosions, varied enemy units, and excellent level design.
The only glaring weakness I've found is that the game is a bit too short though-- but then again, this is true for most Konami game.
No, not from a game whose name is still going strong in various console-based games, although only one more PC conversion (Super C) was made.

Although most of the other points in the game are pretty easy to earn, finishing the arcade mode on one credit is probably the game's toughest achievement.
Once you get past the arcade vs. NES debate, Contra plays accurately, and when you get a good connection, the true co-op gameplay is much better than the side-by-side co-op that many other Konami games have been doing on Xbox Live Arcade.
Neo Contra is filled with over-the-top shooting action and twitch gameplay, so it's good for some kicks, even if the game ultimately doesn't provide much depth or challenge.

Contra's simple gameplay pioneered new standards for the side-scrolling shooter genre, with eight-way directional shooting that allowed more freedom than the typical '80s shooter.
Two-player cooperative play is also a huge part of why we loved (and continue to love) the game, as we still remember the co-op tactics of our youth: player one takes the spread gun, player two grabs the laser, and no one stops shooting.
