Velvet Revolver: Contraband Review @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
This band has a very hard rock sound, and although very raw and powerful, it can be melodic, such as in the songs "Fall To Pieces" and "Loving The Alien." Slash is stilll rockin', dishing out one awesome riff after the other.
This bands music is not the combination of either, so if you go and buy the album thinking they are then you will be surprised because all your going to hear is a new band named Velvet Revolver.
Scott was in rehab while the band recoded the songs and then he came to finish the lyrics, and you can tell on some somgs that he fought drugs, on songs like "Slither", or "Fall To Pieces" or "Superhuman".

Obviously the other guys in the band are awesome as well, and i was particularly impresed with Dave Kushner, who often plays the riffs with Slash playing simple melodies over the top: excellent guitar work.
Stone Temple Pilots are very similar to bands such as Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana and it is this kind of music which eventually signalled the demise of Guns n Roses so it was a strange choice to pick Scott but I think an interesting one.
Before buying, this "digipak" version of contraband appears to be nothing more then a bonus disc with an extra track on it, so naturally, it had more appeal to me then the normal version.

Of course the mellow beauty is short-lived as the band immediately jumps back into the turbulent fray on "Slither," yet another grinding, surging blast of thunderstruck chugging metal mayhem.
As I stated above, the major downfall to Contraband is that the band shows very little diversity—only three mellow songs out of a total 13—choosing instead to keep things amped to full tilt for much of the duration.
But it's when the band lets their machismo reside in the shadows that things really begin to heat up, Weiland showcasing a voice that is both rich and commanding and Slash and Kushner unveiling some downright engaging six-string mellowness.
