  Orchestration: Contrabass Clarinet
The contrabass clarinet is pitched in the key of Bb, and parts for it are universally written transposed in treble clef, as if it were a Bb soprano clarinet.
As a result, the contrabass part tends not to move as quickly as the bass clarinet (or soprano clarinet) parts, although it is likely to be at least as agile as a bass saxophone, and probably at least as agile as a bass trombone or tuba.
The contrabass clarinet is not a particularly common instrument.

Contrabass clarinet - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
It is a B♭ instrument, although the E♭ contra-alto clarinet is sometimes referred to as the E♭ contrabass clarinet.
The contrabass clarinet is also sometimes known by the name pedal clarinet—this term referring not to any aspect of the instrument's mechanism but to an analogy between its very low tones and the pedal tones of the trombone, or the pedal department of the organ.
Unlike other clarinets, the contrabass clarinet is usually built with only a single trill key used by the right hand instead of four of them.

Clarinet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In classical music, clarinets are part of standard orchestral instrumentation, which frequently includes two clarinetists playing individual parts — each player usually equipped with a pair of standard clarinets in B flat and A. Clarinet sections grew larger during the 19th century, employing a third clarinetist or a bass clarinet.
Clarinets are also commonly found in jazz, especially in its earlier forms such as the Big Band music of the 1930s and 1940s.
Clarinet choirs and quartets often play arrangements of both classical and popular music, in addition to a body of literature specially written for a combination of clarinets by composers such as Arnold Cooke, Alfred Uhl, Lucien Caillet and Vaclav Nehlybel.

 Contrabass Clarinet
The contrabass clarinet is pitched in Bb, two octaves below the Bb soprano clarinet (one octave below the bass clarinet), with a range frequently extended downward to low D or C (the lowest Bb on the piano).
The Eb contrabass (also known as the "contra-alto" or "contralto") is also available in loop or straight forms, in metal or wood, from Selmer (Paris) (rosewood), Selmer/Bundy (resonite), Buffet Crampon (wood), Leblanc (metal), and Vito (resonite).
It is pitched in between the Bb bass and the Bb contrabass instruments, with low range to Eb, D or C (concert Gb, F or Eb, an octave below the bass clef).

 Clarinet
Clarinets are descendants of the chalumeau, with a cylindrical bore and a single reed.
Clarinets are relatively recent additions to the orchestra and are standard instruments in the concert band, symphonic band, military bands, wind ensembles, and chamber ensembles.
The clarinet sound is produced by the vibrations of the reed attached to the mouthpiece as the air moves across it.

There are 13 keys and 2 rings on the tube, and the fingering is the same as for the B flat clarinet except for the eight highest semitones.
A contrabass clarinet in F, an octave below the basset horn, constructed b Albert of Brussels in 1890, was, we believe, considered successfu but it differed in design from the pedal clarinet.

Clarinets are usually pitched in the key of B flat or A, although there are other harmony clarinets in the keys of C, Eb, D, and Ab.
The main body of the clarinet is divided into the clarion joint whose holes and most keys are operated by the left hand, and the chalumeau joint with holes and most keys operated by the right hand.
Early clarinets did not play well in the lower register, so chalumeaux continued to be made to play the low notes and these notes became known as the chalumeau register.

 Woodwind Central - Clarinet Info
Like other cylindrical tubes, the clarinet overblows at the interval not of its first upper partial, the interval of an octave (as the flute and oboe do), but at its 2nd (the interval of a 12th).
The notes of the instrument's first octave are obtained in the normal way and the gap of a 5th before the overblowing begins has to be filled by additional side-holes which leave the tone weaker at this point and the fingering somewhat more awkward.
Reeds may be either single, as in the clarinet family, or double (in the latter the two halves of the mouthpiece itself being pieces of reed vibrating against each other).

A clarinet type instrument has been around for many hundreds of years, although the instrument that we recognize as a clarinet wasn't invented until the end of the 17th century.
Some clarinets are made with a different set of keys; although the Boehm system is the most common, both the Albert system and the Auler (pronounced oiler) system are still in use.
Clarinets come in many different sizes and all are transposing instruments, which means that the music for the clarinets is written in different pitches than the note actually sounds.

The second instrument that is missing is the basset clarinet; it is exactly like the A clarinet except that it has keywork down to a low C (it is made famous by Mozart's clarinet concerto K622).

Between the time of the first bass clarinet and the first saxophone patents, Sax was developing the general idea that the characteristic sound of a particular instrument could be realised through a family of instruments, the composite range of which would go from the deepest bass to the highest soprano.
The contrabass model in G would be comparable in pitch to a half contrabassoon or semi-contrabassoon and the bourdon to a contrabassoon.
Although manufacturers of the manifold reed contrabass constructions that have been described by Eppelsheim[64] usually gave the name contrabassoon" to their creations, there were so few similarities to the positions of keys, the fingerings, and the bore relationships of the normal bassoon that bassoonists could not easily accept them.

This phenomenon, which does not exist on bass clarinets with single-hole venting, is the primary reason for the addition of an "S" (for Selmer and Buffet-Crampon instruments) or an "L" (for older Leblanc and others) next to particular fingerings.
When I first tryed a contrabass clarinet 15 years ago, I was surprised that I could not play higher than the C played with thumb and register key, and the few pieces I had very seldom went higher.
The contra instruments (the Eb contra alto clarinet (sometimes called Eb contrabass) and Bb contra bass clarinet) have an automatic venting mechanism, and by closing the third finger of the right hand (thus changing register keys) you raise the pitch (useful for the notes d#3-a#3).
