Contrabassoons typically range down to Bb-0, and are often extended down to A-0 (the lowest A on the piano).
The contrabassoon is truly the bourdon of the orchestra, reaching notes half an octave below the string bass (not counting five-string basses, and basses with C extensions).
Modern contrabassoons are made by Heckel, Fox, Wolf, Moennig, Moosman, Püchner, Adler, and Amati (and possibly by others).

The contrabassoon was developed in the mid-17th century; the oldest surviving instrument, which came in four parts and had only three keys, was built in 1714.
It was around that time that the contrabassoon began gaining acceptance in church music, and by the end of the 18th century it was making its way into British military bands.
For this reason the contrabass woodwind parts often were scored for, and contrabassoon parts were often played on, contrabass sarrusophone or, less frequently, reed contrabass, until improvements to the contrabassoon by Heckel in the late 19th century secured its place as the standard double reed contrabass.

 Concerto for Contrabassoon, Gunther Schuller
The Concerto for Contrabassoon was completed on November 25, 1978 and was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra at the suggestion of Lewis Lipnick, its own contrabassoonist, who was the soloist in the premiere.
The contrabassoon fares even less well, alas, the locker room jokes, mostly unprintable, and snide asides that the instrument’s name really means ‘against the bassoon’ abound.
In addition to the solo contrabassoon, the score of the Concerto calls for 4 flutes (2 doubling piccolo), 4 oboes, (2 doubling English horn), 3 clarinets (1 doubling E-flat clarinet, 1 doubling bass clarinet), contrabass clarinet, 3 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba; timpani (four players); celesta (doubling piano); harp; and strings.

 Contrabassoon Technique
Of all the double reed instruments, and perhaps of all the commonly used musical instruments, the contrabassoon is certainly the least understood, and often the least well-played.
Contrabassoon keywork is by no means standardized; due to the enormous expense of the instruments, many essentially antique contras are still in use.
Although written for the French contrabassoon, it works well for the German contra also (it appears, in fact, that the fingering system is nearly the same on both).

The dimensions for the bore of this pipe were derived from measurements taken from a number of contrabassoons.
Next, a short pipe, the pipe between the tuning slide and the wood, was made and installed; it yielded further improvement to the sound, especially the pitch definition of the lowest notes.

It confronts the cityscape and its denizens, and that leads to the central section, in which the conflict is joined between these forces; the solo part becomes much more animated and aggressive, while the string orchestra takes on the anguished lament (the protagonists thereby trading places).
