I know there are contradance books out there (although I haven't read any yet) and I've heard that there are even contradance videos available (don't ask me where) but instead of having to refer people to other sources, I thought it would be useful to make some of that information available right here.
I hope that by explaining some of the technical aspects and social conventions of contradance, these notes will help analytical types more quickly reach the comfort level necessary to abandon themselves to the power of the music and the flow of the dance—that's where the real learning and enjoyment begin.
Most contradances take place in church halls, though school gymnasiums are also a popular location.

The term "contradance" seems to be more prevalent in the article than "contra dance".
Since contredanse is the preferred U.S. spelling and is the second-choice U.K. spelling, that seems best, but contra dance is certainly preferable to contradance which both U.K. and U.S. authorities consider incorrect.
