Tamoxifen Therapy and Contralateral Breast Cancer - January 15, 2000 - American Academy of Family Physicians
The reduction in incidence of contralateral breast cancer is proportional to the length of tamoxifen treatment.
Tamoxifen significantly reduced the incidence of contralateral breast cancer, and its antiestrogen effect seemed to slow the development and growth of breast cancer, which is primarily governed by the direct action of estrogen.
Some trials have shown that contralateral breast cancers in women who were treated with tamoxifen were more frequently estrogen-receptornegative, compared with primary tumors and contralateral breast cancers in women who were not treated with tamoxifen.

BioMed Central | Full text | Response of SII cortex to ipsilateral, contralateral and bilateral flutter stimulation in ...
The center of the distribution of the peaks of absorbance evoked by contralateral and ipsilateral stimulation, such as those shown in Figure 2, were used to define the anterior and posterior regions of SII in subsequent analyses (e.g., the peaks were used as the center point of the sampled regions of interest).
However, because the difference between the contralateral and ipsilateral responses is more robust than the difference between the contralateral and bilateral responses, Figure 6 displays the results of cluster analysis of the anterior and posterior regions of SII independently.
The responses evoked by contralateral and ipsilateral flutter stimulation of the central pad of the cat forepaw define functional subdivisions in SII: the two modes of stimulation maximally activate cortical regions that are anterior and posterior to one another, respectively.

Anatomic-Clinical Substantiation of the Contralateral Pterional Approach in Surgery of Aneurysms of the Willis Circle ...
Structures of the contralateral hemisphere are approached through a space, limited by the falciform process at the front, the terminal plate of the third ventricle and chiasm at the back, a basal surface of the frontal lobe from above and the anterior cranial fossa base from below.
When the contralateral approach is applied, a surgeon can enlarge an interoptic space and extend a zone of access by mobilizing both optic nerves, dissecting a membranous part of the optic nerve canals or achieving transposition of the optic nerves, using a transbasal corridor.
Arteries of the contralateral hemisphere were approached through the above microsurgical corridors after the arachnoid dissection on the side, ipsilateral to the approach, perforation of the terminal plate of the third ventricle and achievement of good relaxation of the brain.

Brain Herniation Radiology, Pathology, and Neurology
Contralateral hemiparesis occurs with compression of the ipsilateral cerebral peduncle.
The ipsilateral cistern is widened because of the fact that the brain stem is inferiorly contiguous with the spinal cord leading to a long rigid structure as shown in the coronal CT image.
This is due to compression of the contralateral cerebral peduncle against the incisura.

The Contralateral Approach to Exercise Rehab
Their results suggest the mechanisms underlying cross education of muscular strength are explained primarily by the activation of central neural factors during contralateral training.
The contralateral exercises can (and should) be done whenever an injured region is immobilized, whether casted or pinned; and also when there is too much pain or inflammation to consider direct exercising.
Recommend contralateral exercises to supply the stimulus necessary to take advantage of the early exercise phenomenon, while avoiding the potential for re-injury of the damaged area.

Benefits and Risks of Tamoxifen are Similar - National Cancer Institute
The benefits of tamoxifen, including protection against cancer in the second breast (contralateral breast cancer), have been demonstrated in previous studies whose subjects were predominantly white.
The NCI scientists did two analyses of the data: one to determine the effect of tamoxifen on contralateral breast cancer in white and African American women, the other to determine the effect of tamoxifen on the rates of blood clot-related events in African American and white patients.
Race had no effect on the rate of contralateral breast cancers, and the reduced rate of contralateral cancer due to tamoxifen treatment was the same in both races.

Given the uncertainty of the incidence of metachronous contralateral inguinal hernias, there are many approaches to this problem.
Experience indicates approximately 15 percent of children have had a contralateral patent processus vaginalis and there has been approximately a 3 percent incidence of false negatives and no false positives with this technique.
In conclusion, laparoscopic contralateral groin exploration is a safe and accurate method of assessing the asymptomatic groin in children who present with a unilateral inguinal hernia, and may help to avoid an open groin exploration.

However, before ascertaining that EMG contralateral imbalances of back muscles are related to back muscle impairment or to any other mechanism, we must control some other factors that could be related to pain behaviors such as asymmetric postures and efforts.
Another limitation is that some factors that may influence EMG contralateral imbalances were not accounted for because CLBP subjects with potentially significant leg length discrepancy were not excluded and the possible effect of handedness [18] was not assessed because only 5 of the 55 CLBP subjects were left-handed.
However, a systematic effect of handedness would have produced EMG contralateral imbalances with a clear positive or negative sign, which was not the case in the present right-handed dominant sample of subjects.

Methods: The risk of developing a contralateral breast cancer is examined among 4198 women diagnosed with breast carcinoma in situ and reported to the Connecticut Tumor Registry (CTR) between January 1, 1975 and March 14, 1998 using Kaplan—Meier estimation.
The cumulative 5- and 10-year probabilities of being diagnosed with a contralateral breast cancer among women initially diagnosed with a lobular breast carcinoma in situ (LCIS) were 11.9% (95% confidence interval, 9.5—14.3%) and 13.9% (95% confidence interval, 11.0—16.8%), respectively.

Unilateral removal or reversible cooling deactivation of the equivalent region in cats also results in an equally severe contralateral neglect, with the cats unable to report the position of visual stimuli in the contralateral hemifield as assessed by visual orienting.
In order to compare the effects of cooling posterior parietal cortex or the superior colliculus in the left hemisphere while posterior parietal cortex of the left hemisphere was deactivated, we implanted cooling loops bilaterally in the posterior middle suprasylvian (pMS) sulcus and over the dorsal surface of the left superior colliculus.
Therefore, deactivation of the contralateral superior colliculus results in a restoration of visual orienting responses that is both qualitatively and quantitatively inferior to that identified during cooling of the contralateral posterior parietal cortex.

Mayo Clinic researchers report that most women who have a contralateral (opposite to cancerous breast) prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) are satisfied and would elect this procedure again.
CPM is the removal of the unaffected breast in addition to the cancerous breast -- to reduce risk of future breast cancer.
"Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy is one option to reduce contralateral risk in women diagnosed with a first breast cancer who also have a strong family history of breast cancer," says Marlene Frost, Ph.D., Mayo Clinic oncology researcher and lead investigator of the study.
