Topic: Contrarian

Contrarian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Philosophically, a contrarian is a person who tends to take positions that openly challenge conventional wisdom.
Contrarians are sometimes thought of as perma-bears—market participants who are permanently biased to a bear market view.
However, the contrarian is not biased specifically towards a negative view of the price trend in a market, but rather takes a contrary position to the prevailing crowd's view, whether that view is positive or negative.

In financial economics, a contrarian is a person who would tend to take positions that are not in line with, or often even directly opposite to, the primary crowd.
Contrarians are often thought of as "perma-bears", or market participants who are permanently biased to a negative trend, or bear market view.
In more correct usage, a contrarian is not in fact biased towards a negative view of the price trend in a market, but rather is simply counter or contrary to the prevailing market trend, whether that trend is positive or negative.

Contrarians are particularly active in the areas of global warming and other environmental issues, but they have been active in many other areas as well, such as tobacco and health issues.
Contrarians demand endless analysis of issues to prevent any action from being taken rather than to ensure that the most reasonable conclusion be arrived at.
Contrarians often refer to their endless demands for more study and their claims that doubts still remain—no matter what the consensus—as "sound science," a bit of doublespeak that is the scientific equivalent of the filibuster.

The CEO Refresher - The Contrarian Leader
And the contrarian leader knows she has to allow lieutenants to make as many decisions as is reasonably within their capacity to make, even if it means from time to time that they will make mistakes that the leader might have avoided.
But the contrarian leader is always suspicious of conventional wisdom and is willing to go against it when it's in the best interest of his organization or institution to do so.
So I think a person who practices some of the principles of contrarian leadership is in a better position when the going gets really tough to understand that she can't just try to catch up with her competitors; that's not a formula for winners.

I simply wish to promote the contraria in the contrarian, to emphasize the strengthening of ones own case when one is able to come to the opposing side's court to argue.
To convince the other that his or her tightly held convictions, deeply rooted in the biological-neuro-physiological development of the individual personality of this person, are wrong, requires us to come to the others side, to promote argument on the others terms and to beat the other at his own game on his own turf.
Thus I argue with a contrarian perspective the gravest injustice would be to-be-polarized.

In reality, contrarian investing is none of these: though the tactics of a contrarian may resemble one or more of these naive descriptions, they miss the point and seriously so.
And the contrarian is more likely to be attracted to a point of view that has not yet been thought of - the 'empty file drawer' idea - than one that has been considered and rejected.
Contrarians look for these small opportunities by noting when the consensus seems to be clustered and they examine the other, independent alternatives.
