SED Panel Contrast Ratio Boosted to 100,000:1 -- Tech-On!
At the Display 2005 event held in Tokyo on April 20, 2005, SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) Inc., a joint venture formed by Canon Inc. and Toshiba Corp., unveiled a SED panel with full On/Off contrast ratio boosted to approximately 100,000:1.
The key factor behind the sharp rise in contrast ratio is a broad reduction in fl luminance.

Video Displays and Home Theater Projectors: The Contrast Ratio Number Game
Contrast is the ratio between the white and fl parts in an image.
ANSI Contrast represents a more fair way to test contrast ratio as the presence of fl and white at the same time is closer to the real world environment rather than the all fl or all white image used during the full ON/OFF contrast measurement.
Therefore, opt for a high contrast projector or display (typically 2000:1), only as long as you can view the image in a light controlled room; you need to view the image in a completely darkened room to be able to perceive the marginal difference between a 2000:1 and a 500:1 contrast ratio.

Contrast ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The contrast ratio is a metric of a display system, defined as the ratio of the luminosity of the brightest and the darkest color the system is capable of producing.
With such a room, the contrast ratio of the image would be the same as the device.
Contrast ratio is most commonly considered in connection with displays that share the same light emitter for all pixels and employ an array of modulators for individual pixels, which manipulate their transmissivity or reflectivity.

Introduction--Monitor Technology Guide   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Contrast ratio, most often talked about with LCD monitors, is the measure of the difference of brightness levels between the brightest white and the darkest fl.
Additionally, as a more clear indication of overall monitor performance, contrast ratio should also be evaluated in conjunction with brightness, viewing angles and response time since all specifications are inter-related.
HDTV has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for computer displays, a 16:10 aspect ratio is optimal for rectangular displays because it allows for two full pages of text to be shown side-by-side on one screen.

 Weber and contrast ratios
Contrast ratio refers to the ratio of intensities between the most intense (brightest) and least intense (darkest) elements of a scene, an image, or a display.
A ratio of 30:1 is typical of viewing television in a living room.
The minimum intensity is defined by the contrast ratio, CR; its intensity is 1 divided by CR.

 Feature Article
Contrast Ratio (CR) is basically a ratio between any two brightness levels, but the CR that we are most interested in is the ratio of brightness between 0%stim and 100%stim.
For instance, the ANSI CR is the ratio between the averages (or sums) of eight 100%stim boxes in a 4x4 checkerboard and the averages (or sums) of eight 0%stim boxes in that same checkerboard.
Contrast ratio doesn't have to be a ratio between white and fl, it can be between two other levels (like white and one level above fl), but it is most common for it to be used for the ratio of luminance between white and fl for display devices.

Contrast ratio is a key feature that is often overlooked or misunderstood during the purchase process.
Simply put, contrast ratio is the measure of a monitor's flest fl compared to its whitest white.
In practical terms, the higher the contrast ratio, the better the television's ability to discern fine, detailed differences between dark and light colors.

Contrast Ratio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Contrast Ratio is a measurement of the difference in brightness between the whitest white and the darkest fl within an image.
A ratio of 300:1 means the brightest point in the image is 300 times as bright as the darkest point.
A higher contrast ratio therefore means a larger difference in brightness.

Contrast Ratio, What is Contrast Ratio: by ChooseYourTv.com
Contrast Ratio is the difference between the whitest white and the darkest fl colors that the display can show.
Contrast ratio is often used when describing TVs.
A high contrast ratio, such as 4000:1, signifies a better color representation (bright images will appear better against a darker background) than a lower contrast ratio, such as 2500:1.

Contrast ratio, while important, tells just part of the story.
Contrast ratio (CR) is defined as the difference of luminance energy measured from the brightest white and then compared to the luminance energy measured from the darkest fl of a particular device or a particular environment.
For example, if the white area is 1000 candelas and the fl area is 1 candela, the screen is said to boast a 1000:1 contrast ratio.

The level of contrast is controlled rather simply: the x signal from the graphics card doesn’t go directly to the matrix, but is first multiplied by the coefficient C. Thus, it is clear that white color that corresponds to the maximum angle of the crystals is only reached at the maximum contrast setting.
Second, the contrast ratio is measured in the center of the screen, while the user sees the sides of the screen at a different angle than the center.
