Of the members forming CDC, William Norris (additional info and facts about William Norris) was the unanimous choice to become CEO (The corporate executive responsible for the operations of the firm; reports to a board of directors; may appoint other managers (including a president)) of the new company.
Little Character was a success, and they soon released a transistorized version of their 1103 design as the CDC 1604 in 1959, with the first machine delivered to the US Navy (The navy of the United States of America; maintains and trains and equips combat-ready naval forces) in 1960.

In 1962, Seymour Cray opened a Control Data Corporation laboratory near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he led the design of the CDC 6600 computer.
The CDC 6600 is believed to have been the first computer to be designated as a "supercomputer," offering the fastest clock speed for its day (100 nanoseconds).
It was equipped with a large disk storage device and six high-speed drums as storage intermediate in speed and accessibility between the central core storage and magnetic tapes.
