Convair 990 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Convair 990 Coronado was a jet airliner produced by the Convair division of General Dynamics, a "stretched" version of their earlier Convair 880 produced in response to a request from American Airlines.
The 990 was lengthened by 10 feet, which increased the passengers from between 88 and 110 in the 880, to between 96 and 121 (depending on the interior).
One interesting change compared to the 880 was the addition of large bulges on the upper wing, in order to make the plane follow the area rule more closely, and thus reduce drag.

The Convair Division continued, however, to be involved with space and delivered the first Space Shuttle Orbiter mid-section fuselage to North American Rockwell, producer of the Orbiter, in 1975.
Convair also developed and eventually produced the Tomahawk cruise missile, which was still in use in 2001.

Convair was keenly interested in remaining a supplier to the world’s airlines as the demand for its Model 440 short-range piston airliner began to slow in the mid-1950s.
In keeping with the goal of optimizing the 880 for shorter flight distances, the aircraft held less fuel than its rivals and was designed to operate from runways as short as 5,000 feet in length.

Glencoe 1/126 Convair 880 by Scott Van Aken
Convair had considerable success with its short range 240/340/440 airliners, but wanted to play with the big boys and that meant a four engine jet with continental range.
However, faster didn't sell as well as Convair had hoped and while they did sell quite a few to many US and foreign carriers, the 880 and later 990 didn't meet the expectations of Convair and it was their last foray into the large airliner market.
This particular kit is merely an older kit that Glencoe has obtained the rights to and stuck in their box with new instructions and vastly improved decals.
