Convair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, commonly known as Convair, was the result of a 1943 merger between Consolidated Aircraft and Vultee Aircraft, resulting in a leading aircraft manufacturer of the United States.
In March 1953, Convair was acquired by General Dynamics, becoming the Convair Division of the merged company.
Convair also developed Charactron tubes, which were precursors to modern CRT monitors.

 The Convair 880/990 Aircraft Information
At first, Convair 880 would use the Pratt and Whitney J57 but they were rejected and the aircraft decided to use the General Electric CJ-805, a civil version of the military engine J79 which was placed at the Convair B-58 Hustler.
It was then that Convair made another mistake by promising to American Airlines to develop an improved version of 880 for an order of 25 aircrafts, the Model 30 (Convair 990).
Only 35 Convair 990 were constructed (including aircrafts that were not delivered) and the last commercial flight of the type was done in 1987.

 Airliners.net Articles: The Might-Have-Beens: Convair 880 and 990
Convair was keenly interested in remaining a supplier to the world’s airlines as the demand for its Model 440 short-range piston airliner began to slow in the mid-1950s.
Flight testing with the first 990 resumed in late April 1961 and while the control problem and engine vibrations were remedied, it became clear to Convair that the plane could not meet its promised speed without an unacceptable rate of fuel burn, thereby missing the payload/range promises that had also been made.
Swissair’s 990 aircraft would be operated under the “Coronado” fleet name, a tribute to Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, one of the first Europeans to visit the area around southern California that was home to Convair.

 Convair 990
The 990 was an attempt by the Convair Corporation to compete with Boeing and Douglas in the highly competitive jet transport marketplace of the late 1950s.
Unfortunately for Convair, Boeing and Douglas had captured the early market with sales of the 707 and DC-8, respectively, whereas Convair’s initial attempt to enter the rapidly growing industry was marred by massive losses of over $425 million on its Convair 880 transport.
When Boeing marketed their new 720 transport it threatened to eliminate Convair from the competition; Convair responded with a new design designated the Convair 990, which would be marketed on speed and luxury.

ASN Aircraft accident description Convair CV-990-30A-5 EC-BJC - Nantes
At the same time a Spantax Convair CV-990, flight BX400 heading for London, was flying towards the Nantes VOR on the same altitude, but on a different airway.
Because of this, the Convair crew were instructed arrive at the VOR at 13:00.
Because the Convair was already quite close to the VOR the crew asked for confirmation of these instructions.

 Convair 880
In fact, when seen at the airport, the Convair 880 and 990 are often confused with one or the other of the more familiar 707 or DC-8 aircraft.
The Convair 880 first flew in 1959, and the first flight of the more advanced Convair 990 was in 1961.
Both the 880 and the 990 are somewhat smaller and lighter in weight than are the 707 and the DC-8.

 Convair Productionlist
Convair built quite a large number of piston driven ConvairLiners, and Canadair built them under license.
The lists on those aircraft are made even longer because of the enormous amount of conversions over the years.
The fast Convair JetLiners were far outnumbered by Boeing and Douglas jets.

 Al's Kit Corner
Most of them are now very desirable collectibles in and of themselves and seem to fetch handsome prices on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/) since none of them except for the Skyray have ever been kitted in the respective scales by any other kit manufacturer.
The Convair jetliners are typical of all the Microscale Model Kits releases.
The great decals sheets along with the fact that the two kits are true 1/144 scale (Revell’s CV-990 is slightly larger) have led to a high demand for these models among airline modelers and collectors despite their simplicity.

Aerospaceweb.org | Ask Us - Whitcomb Area Rule & Küchemann Carrots
Convair soon put these findings into practice during the development of the CV-990 airliner.
Although the competing Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 had already captured the bulk of the market, Convair hoped to attract customers interested in a higher cruise speed.
Thanks to the addition of antishock bodies and other improvements inspired by the area rule, including modified engine nacelle and pylon shapes, Convair engineers were able to increase the economical cruise speed of the CV-990 to an impressive Mach 0.89.

 Convair C-990 Coronado model airplane
The first Convair 990, also called the Coronado, made its first flight on January 24, 1961.
Though the 990 was a good performer aerodynamically, it was not well-conceived in terms of payload, operator options, and cabin customer appeal.
The Convair's 880 and 990 program proved an extremely costly venture for the company, and since that time the aviation divisions of General Dynamics Corporation have confined their activities within the field of military aviation.

Convair 990 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 990 was lengthened by 10 feet, which increased the number of passengers from between 88 and 110 in the 880, to between 96 and 121 (depending on the interior).
This was still considerably fewer than the contemporary Boeing 707 (110 to 189) or Douglas DC-8 (105 to 173), although the 990 remained some 25 to 35mph faster than either in cruise.
The 990s market niche was soon to be destroyed entirely by the Boeing 727 and the Boeing 720 (a derivative of the 707), and by the time the line was shut down in 1963 only 37 990s had been produced, bringing General Dynamics' entire production of commercial jet airliners to 102 airframes.

 Concept to Reality
This favorable effect of the bodies was attributed to reducing the separation on the outboard region, which resulted from the lessening of the strength of the local shock and the retardation of the outflow of the boundary layer into the outer region.
Data on this novel antishock body concept were quickly disseminated to the U.S. industry, and Whitcomb was subsequently awarded a patent for the antishock body concept.
NASA later acquired a Convair 990 aircraft for use in its research programs at the Dryden Flight and Ames Research Centers for activities ranging from evaluating new landing gear and brake designs for the space shuttle to direct lift control and medium-altitude research missions.

Introduced into a market dominated by the 707 and DC-8, the 139 passenger 990A didn't stand a chance and only 37 were produced, going into service primarily with American Airlines and Swissair.

This book is much like other recent ones in style by other authors and publishers about great jet airliners of past and present.
There is much detail about the history of each and every one of the Convair commerical jets built.
What I would have like to have seen more of (and this goes for many of these types of books) is more of the technical information about the construction of these planes, including details about aerodynamics, control surface workings, motor development, etc. Maybe I am not looking at the right books.
