The Convair 880 was a jet airliner produced by the Convair division of General Dynamics.
Convair began development of a medium-range commercial jet in April 1956, to compete with announced products from Boeing and Douglas.
Initially the design was called the Skylark but the name was later changed to the Golden Arrow, then Convair 600 and then finally the 880, both numbers referring to its top speed (600 mph or 880 ft/s).

Convair addressed this problem, beginning with the B-36D model, by adding four auxiliary (A gas turbine produces a stream of hot gas that propels a jet plane by reaction propulsion) jet engines in pods under the outer wings to provide short-term boosts in power.
Convair rigged a couple of bunks at the top of the 12-foot-diameter radio compartment behind the flight deck.
Following the cancellation of the United States, several high-level officials of the Navy questioned the government's policy, and asserted that the contract with Convair was corrupt: Johnson was a former member of the Convair Board of Directors.

Convair actually built one transport/cargo version of the B-36, the XC-99, which could carry up to 100,000 pounds of cargo or 400 troops.
My theory is that shortly after the cards were made, Pan American decided to go with the Boeing 377 Strotocruiser instead of the larger Convair XC-99.This would have made continued distribution of the cards seem foolish because the plane, when unveiled, would bear little resemblence to that on the cards.
Given the quantities of airline cards from this period that have survived, I have often wondered why this set of cards, issued by one of the largest airlines, is so rare.

Aviation History Magazine November 2004 Editorial
The overhead distraction that made the biggest impression on me during those long-ago days, however, was not a sleek, deadly fighter, but the Convair XC-99, an aerial behemoth of a cargo plane created by adding a fat fuselage to B-36 wings and tail.
Another result was loud rebukes for airplane gawking that was considered irreverent inattention to the training by my tech instructor (drill instructor elsewhere), who seemed to enjoy any excuse to bark at us scum-of-the-earth recruits in our unsnazzy, sweat-stained fatigues.
Its six engines, when they were all running, made a distinctive throb in the sky, and it was large enough that it was easy to spot without looking all over for the source of the sound.
