Convair XF-92 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Research from the XF-92A test program was used in the development of Convair's two later delta-winged interceptors, the F-102 Delta Dagger and the F-106 Delta Dart, as well as Convair's B-58 Hustler bomber.
Convair continued work on the XF-92A, however, intending to use it as a pure "x-series" aircraft.
The Convair XF-92 was the first American delta-wing aircraft.

 The General Dynamics B-58 Hustler
Convair researchers had been working on the same idea late in the war, and in 1948 Convair tested the delta wing on the XF-92 experimental interceptor.
Convair engineers initially focused on "parasite bomber" schemes, involving a relatively small supersonic bomber that would be carried by a B-36 to the target area.
Fortunately, Convair was also working on a more conventional bomber, and after a test program involving wind tunnel models, rocket-boosted models, and radio-controlled air-dropped models, in October 1952 the USAF requested that Convair develop a full-scale supersonic bomber prototype.

The Convair model 7002, a delta winged turbojet airplane better known as the XF-92A was the first in a long line of American Delta Winged Aircraft.
By the end of 1948, Shannon had made 10 flights in the XF-92A and another Convair pilot, Bill Martin joined the program and made his first flight on February 9th, 1949.
The F2Y, F-102, F-106 & B-58 Hustler were all based around the flight data acquired by the flight testing of the XF-92A.

 Convair XF-92 // USAF - NASA (signed)
With the experience gained from the XF-92 program, Convair was able to win the competition for the "1954 Interceptor" program and to build the successful delta wing F-102.
The Convair Model 7002 was completed in 1948 as a flying mock-up for the proposed delta wing XP-92 interceptor.
Only one XF-92 was built and it now resides in the Air Force Musuem collection at Dayton, OH.

In short, Boeing and Convair were instructed to stop their present investigations and to begin new Phase I designs of their respective projects (MX-1712 and MX-1626), as dictated by Directive 34.
Secondly, both GOR and the directive called for the application of the weapon system concept, an objective with which Convair was familiar.
Back in 1951, although reasonably sure that Convair and Boeing offered the best hopes to secure quickly the urgently needed supersonic bomber, AMC had requested informal proposals from other aircraft producers including Douglas, Lockheed, Martin, and North American.

Chordwise pressure distributions were measured over the left wing of the Convair XF-92A delta-wing airplane to determine the effect of lift upon the wing characteristics at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers.
The aerodynamic loads acting over the vertical tail were determined from steady and maneuvering flight during the investigation of the lateral stability and control characteristics of the Convair XF-92A airplane.
As part of the flight reserch program conducted with the Convair XF-92A delta-wing research arplane, rudder pulse maneuvers were obtained at an altitude of about 30,000 feet over a Mach number range of 0.52 to 0.92.

 XF-92A Dart
The Convair XF-92A aircraft was powered by a Allison J-33-A turbo jet engine with an afterburner, and was unique in having America's first delta wing.
Lippisch came to the US after the war and, working with the Air Force and Convair, aided in the design of the tailless delta airplane XF-92A which, in turn, lead to the Convair F-102, F-106 and B-58 delta wing airplanes.
Besides validating the thin delta wing principle, the XF-92A played a major role in supporting the development of the Convair F-102A interceptor, the Air Force’s first attempt at an all-weather, supersonic interceptor.

After capturing this data, the US Air Force contracted Convair to develop a delta-wing research aircraft called the XF-92.
Convair engineers then made use of the area rule concept to reduce the wave drag that occurs in transonic and supersonic flight.
Experience with this aircraft allowed Convair to win an Air Force contract to develop a delta-wing interceptor to defend the United States against Soviet bombers.

 Aircraft: Convair XP-92A (XF-92A)
Sacramento, CA An interesting fact concerning the XF-92A (nee XP-92A) is that its ejection seat was removed from another Convair experimental aircraft (the XP-81) for use in the XF-92A.
The XF-92A incorporated a number of 'off-the-shelf' components, many of which were borrowed from other Convair aircraft.
As far as I am aware, this ejection seat is still in the surviving specimen of the XF-92A that is in storage awaiting restoration at the USAF Museum.
