Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Irish Republican Army   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The earliest of these was recognised by the First Dáil as the legitimate army of the Irish Republic, as proclaimed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and reaffirmed by the Dáil in January 1919.
This convention, which subsequently became known as a IRA convention, was called to coincide with the Sinn Féin ard fheis.
Amateur historian Dorothy Macardle claims that the banning of the convention arose because "Mulcahy realised that 70 to 80 per cent of the IRA was against the Treaty and he feared that the Convention could have been used to establish a military dictatorship".

Prisoners in the American Revolutionary War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modern standards, as outlined in the Geneva Conventions, expect captives to be held and cared for by their captors.
While the Continental Army named a commissary to supply them, the task was almost impossible.
During the war, at least 16 hulks, including the infamous HMS Jersey, were placed by British authorities in the waters of Wallabout Bay off the shores of Brooklyn, New York as a place of incarceration for many thousands of American soldiers and sailors during about 1776–1783.

Although the Army is committed to destroying the stockpile by the legislatively imposed deadline of December 31, 2004, it is unlikely to meet that date.
In addition, according to the Army, the original scope of the health risk assessment to operate the disposal facilities was not completely defined, the health assessment requirements have changed, and the requirements currently vary from state to state.
The Army's disposal concept is based on developing mobile systems capable of moving from one location to the next where the munitions are remotely detoxified and the waste is transported to a commercial hazardous waste facility.

Provisional Irish Republican Army - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to this theory, the modern day Irish Republican Army is merely the continuation of the original Irish Republican Army which served as the army of the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence.
However, a minority of republicans argued that the army of the Republic was still the pre-1969 Irish Republican Army, itself the lineal descendant of the defeated faction in the Irish Civil War of 1922-23.
The IRA split into two groups at its Special Army Convention in December 1969, over the issue of abstentionism (whether to sit in, or "abstain" from the Dail or parliament of the Republic of Ireland) and over the question of how to respond to the escalating violence in Northern Ireland (see The Troubles).

MichaelMoore.com : U.S. Army leaders say "no crisis" in recruitment
Army Secretary Francis Harvey told reporters he was concerned about recruitment levels in the last 12 months, which saw the biggest numerical shortfall of the goal since 1979.
It was one of the Army's poorest recruiting performances since the birth of the all-volunteer military in 1973 during the upheaval of the Vietnam War era.
Harvey denied the Army was lowering its standards, but said it had begun observing Pentagon guidelines, which call for 60 percent of recruits to meet certain standards, as opposed to the Army's previous use of a 67-percent standard.

Newshound: Links to daily newspaper articles about Northern Ireland
The Convention, which was originally scheduled to review and presumably extend the IRA's July 1997 ceasefire, had been organised to take place alongside a special Sinn Féin conference called to set out the party strategy for the next five years.
Wilson's function at an IRA Convention would be to reflect the views of IRA prisoners on the issues in front of the IRA delegates.
However at the 1996 Convention the constitution was changed, largely at the urging of dissidents, so that control over arms and explosives was taken out of the Army Council's hands and transferred to the much larger Convention, a conference which can number up to 90 delegates.

The announcement comes in conjunction with an announcement today by the Army’s Chief of Military History at the Association of the U.S. Army convention in Washington, D.C., that lays down the new modular structure for all components of the Army.
A major issue throughout the transformation to modular units was the desire to retain the lineage and honors of historic Army Guard regiments and battalions.
Eight Army Guard brigades have elected to continue wearing their division patches, even though the new modular structure severs the command and control relationship that existed between a division headquarters and its subordinate brigades.
