The Convento de Cristo is located in a delightful garden with spectacular views, about a 15 minute stroll uphill from the centre of town.
The 12th Century Castle attached to the Convento stands prominent, and is a prime location from which to view the active streets and historic buildings.

The Convent of the Order of Christ (Portuguese: Convento de Cristo), in Tomar, Portugal, was originally a Templar stronghold built in the 12th century.
From the outside, the rectangular nave is covered by abundant Manueline motifs, including gargoyles, gothic pinnacles, statues and "ropes" that remind the ones used in the ships during the Age of Discovery, as well as the Cross of the Order of Christ and the emblem of King Manuel I, the armillary sphere.

Built in 1160 along the most hotly contested Muslim-Christian border in Iberia, the Convento da Ordem de Cristo (Convent of the Order of Christ) in Tomar was built as a monastic fortress and a symbol of the Reconquest.
The pillars of the central octogon and the walls of the ambulatory bear polychromed statues of saints and angels under exuberant Late Gothic canopies, while the walls and ceilings of the ambulatory are painted with Late Gothic patterns and panels depicting the life of Christ.
The Chapter House Window and the West façade of the manueline nave of the church is visible from this cloister.

Like many other visitors to the Convento de Cristo at Tomar, I was curious about the use of the pentagram on gravestones which (I presume) belong to brothers of the Order of Christ or their predecessors, the Templars.

Concelho de Tomar is a very nice Portuguese language site which has pages on the local monuments including some lovely pictures of the Convento de Cristo rising above the town.
In the early sixteenth century, the Convento was extended greatly, illustrating the power and riches of the order at that time.
Its chief glories are the the church and chapter house, built by John de Castilho in the exotic Manuelino idiom with luxurious carving - curiously nautical as well as oriental in feeling (presumably emphasising the order's connection with nautical exploration, as Tomar is inland).
