The convergent validities of the traits were given by the validity diagonal, which consists of correlation coefficients of the heterotrait-monomethod type.
Discriminant validities of the traits were determined by comparing the convergent validity coefficients with the correlation coefficients in the corresponding row and column of the heterotrait-heteromethod block, and the corresponding correlation coefficients in the heterotrait-monomethod triangles involving the same variables.
Convergent validity studies are conducted on the tacit assumption that self-estimates of aptitudes and measured aptitudes by standardized aptitude tests are identical.

 Animal Models of Psychiatric Disorders
The evaluation of convergent validity is central to the approach described above in which a model is based theoretically upon a psychological process or behavioral dimension that is hypothesized to be affected in a psychiatric disorder.
Moreover, establishing the face validity of a model objectively is impossible, because claims for face validity of a model almost invariably involve subjective arbitrary arguments that are not necessarily accepted by all investigators in the field (see 87 for examples of models with proposed face validity).
The predictive validity in terms of pharmacological isomorphism of the model is indicated by the fact that pharmacological treatments clinically effective in depression, such as tricyclics, MAO inhibitors, atypical antidepressants, and electroconvulsive shock therapy are effective in reducing the behavioral and "physical" abnormalities seen in animals exposed to uncontrollable stress (87, 88).

 PA 765: Validity
Convergent validity, which is a type of construct validity, refers to the principle that the indicators for a given construct should be at least moderately correlated among themselves.
Convergent validity in this sense exists when the researcher's proposed scale or measure of a given construct correlates with measures of the same construct using instruments proposed by other researchers.
Convergent validity is assessed by correlations between the same tolerance indicator between two methods (ex., racial tolerance with subject data and with spousal data).

Reliability and Validity, Part II - Validity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Validity refers to the issue of whether the test measures what it is intending to measure.
The concurrent validities between the test and other measures of the same domain are correlational measures of convergent validity.
Discriminant validity, are the test scores unrelated to tests and behaviors in different domains, seems to be less often assessed than is convergent validity.

Validity is viewed by the Standards as being a unitary concept, with all evidence being tied to the construct the test is designed to measure.
Convergent validity evidence is gathered by analyzing the relationships among test scores and other measures of the construct.
Convergent validities (monotrait-heteromethod correlations) appear on two diagonals in the lower part of the matrix, and are enclosed within [ ].

Convergent validity The degree to which a measure relates to other characteristics that are conceptually similar to what it's supposed to assess.
Validity is further threatened by the fact that people have response sets (acquiescence and social desirability) that bias their responses.

Internal validation checks the relation between the individual measures included in the scale, and the composite scale itself.
External validation checks the relation between the composite scale and other indicators of the variable, indicators not included in the scale.
Content validation (also called face validity) checks how well the scale measures what it is supposed to measure.

The Learning Style Inventory: Convergent validity Study in an Applied Career Setting
Based on their LSI scores, each participant was categorized as either an Assimilator, a Converger, a Diverger, or an Accommodator.
In turn, Accommodators may have received low ratings due to their own preference for "hands-on" work versus the ability to take a more strategic role, a skill that is required in middle-management positions, and that becomes increasingly important as one progresses upward.
In sum, we found preliminary, qualified support for the convergent validity of the LSI and its constructs.

Recent research suggests that the validity of holistically-scored writing may in turn affect both predictive and convergent validities of holistic scores for writing competence as such tests predict external unrelated scores (GPA) and are convergent with other measures of writing competence.
To reaffirm convergent validity between objective tests and holistically-scored essays, and to establish predictive validity of both formats for gradepoint average (GPA), 392 test profiles were gathered from 1800 freshmen and sophomore student records.
Charney (1984) questions the construct validity of holistic scoring because of the "variability of topics and types of discourse, the arbitrariness of the criteria, and the failure of the raters to adhere to the criteria" (cited in Lauer & Asherp, 1984, p 144).

Convergent validity is the degree to which concepts that should be related theoretically are interrelated in reality.
Discriminant validity is the degree to which concepts that should not be related theoretically are, in fact, not interrelated in reality.
We will see that when we move away from the explicit consideration of methods and when we begin to see convergence and discrimination as differences of degree, we essentially have the foundation for the pattern matching approach to assessing construct validity.

When one is evaluating the convergent validity, one must also be evaluating the discriminant validity.
Anyway, convergent validity is supported if correlations within the table that should be high or at least significant are found to be just that -- high or significant.
Discriminant validity, on the other hand, is demonstrated when some correlations within the matrix which are expected to be low, are indeed low or not significant.

We used Campbell and Fiske's (1951) criteria to estimate convergent and discriminant validity of a correlation matrix consisting of two "traits" (daily use of cigarettes or alcohol) and five "methods" (aggregated student self-report, school personnel prevalence estimate, student prevalence estimate, naturalistic observation of use, and school outdoor refuse evidence of tobacco or alcohol products).
For alcohol, the staff prevalence estimate method showed convergent validity with student prevalence estimate and refuse evidence methods, but the latter two methods nor student self-report were significantly related to each other.
We found discriminant validity for the forementioned relations, although only two of six correlations suggested convergent validity for alcohol.

Construct Validity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Construct validity refers to the degree to which inferences can legitimately be made from the operationalizations in your study to the theoretical constructs on which those operationalizations were based.
Then, I'll discuss the major construct validity threats, the kinds of arguments your critics are likely to raise when you make a claim that your program or measure is valid.
The first formal articulation of the idea of construct validity came from this effort and was couched under the somewhat grandiose idea of the nomological network.

Convergent and discriminant validity are both considered subcategories or subtypes of construct validity.
But while the pattern supports discriminant and convergent validity, does it show that the three self esteem measures actually measure self esteem or that the three locus of control measures actually measure locus of control.
For instance, we might use a face validity or content validity approach to demonstrate that the measures reflect the constructs we say they are (see the discussion on types of construct validity for more information).

The aim of this study was to investigate the construct (convergent) validity of the Australian Therapy Outcome Measures (AusTOMs) by comparing it with the EuroQuol-5D (EQ-5D).
Because constructs are not directly observable and are usually multidimensional, it is important to ascertain that the constructs adequately define and represent the variables that the instrument purports to measure [16].
In particular, convergent validity indicates the degree to which two instruments are measuring similar constructs.

Validity and Reliability   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In ordinary usage, validity is a property of a statement, argument or procedure.
To call a statement, argument or procedure valid is to indicate that it is cogent, well grounded, justifiable or logically correct.
When two measures agree then there is a presumption of validity for the measure being tested, e.g., hospital data from interviews could be validated from admission records, or political surveys can be validated (or invalidated) from election statistics, consumer surveys can be validated from the volume of purchases and so on.

The identity status model is founded upon the relationships of the statuses to their component dimensions.
In fact, the internal validity of the status model is dependent upon the existence of theoretically consistent relationships between each status and the underlying dimensions, exploration and commitment (e.g., a strong and positive relationship between foreclosure and commitment, and a strong and negative relationship between foreclosure and exploration).
