Conway's Game of Life - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Game of Life is a cellular automaton devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970.
Conway was interested in a problem presented in the 1940s by renowned mathematician John von Neumann, who tried to find a hypothetical machine that could build copies of itself and succeeded when he found a mathematical model for such a machine with very complicated rules on a Cartesian grid.

Life was invented by the mathematician John Conway in 1970.
Life is one of the simplest cellular automata to have been studied, but many others have been invented, often to simulate systems in the real world.
Life is one of the simplest examples of what is sometimes called "emergent complexity" or "self-organizing systems." This subject area has captured the attention of scientists and mathematicians in diverse fields.

The Game of Life is well known to almost anyone who has ever programmed a computer, yet far fewer realize the level of sophistication that has been achieved in the design of Life patterns over the past 25 years by a dedicated core of enthusiasts.
The Game of Life has a rich mathematical structure that can only be appreciated fully by watching the intricate behavior that arises from such a simple set of rules.
Those readers familiar with published work on the Game of Life may be surprised at the developments that have occurred in recent years.

What is Life and Cellular Automata?
Conway's Life (Game Of Life, GOL) is the most well known cellular automaton.
Life is more of a simulation where you can alter the parameters but you cannot actually alter the outcome directly; that is done by the conditions of the simulation.
Conway and his graduate students played around with various rules, finally settling on the familiar "birth on 3 / survival on 2 or 3" rule.
