Cook served as Defence Minister in Deakin's 1909-10 ministry, then succeded Deakin as Liberal leader when the government was defeated by Labor in the 1910 elections.
Cook agreed to become Hughes's deputy in the new Nationalist Party, and became Minister for the Navy in Hughes's government.
Cook quit politics in 1921 and was appointed Australian High Commissioner in London, where he served with distinction until 1927.

Cook attained the rank of master in 1757, and in 1758 sailed for Canada aboard HMS Pembroke to take part in naval operations in the St Lawrence River and in the British capture of Quebec.
Cook was to take his vessel as far as 40 degrees south latitude and then proceed in a westerly direction, searching for the unknown continent, until he met the eastern coast of New Zealand, which had been discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642.
Cook didn't know that the Endeavour had sailed into such an extensive reef system, and his journal for June 11 tells us that he was not unduly worried about reefs since he had "the advantage of a fine breeze of wind and a clear moonlight night".

Cook received basic schooling at the village school and was then sent to work for William Sanders in the nearby fishing village of Staithes.
Cook's job as an apprentice required him to become very familiar with the coal ships of the area and he soon learned the ins and outs of the colliers type ships.
Cook was rewarded for his work in Quebec in 1761; he received a bonus of 50 pounds, for "indefatigable industry in making himself the 'master of the pilotage.'" The surveys were so accurate and complete that they were in use until the beginning of the Twentieth Century.

James Cook was born on 27 October 1728 at Marton in Yorkshire.
During this voyage, Cook landed at New Zealand, Tahiti, the Friendly Islands (Tonga), Easter Island, the Marquesas Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, the Isle of Pines and the South Sandwich Islands.
Cook's crew searched to the edge of the Arctic ice without finding a northern passage into the Atlantic, explored and charted the northern Pacific coasts and discovered the islands of the Sandwich Group in the North Pacific Ocean, including Hawaii.

Cook had been massively codified in school and scholarly texts, in pictorial images, place-name s and porcelain; in commemorations and coins, statuary, stamps, poetry, drama and fiction.
Yet, like Captain Cook's Cottage or the spirit of the navigator lurking on Australian beaches, these forms of social memory cannot simply be claimed for history: they are histories between the particular and the universal, between the affective and the scientific, between narrative and theory.

This is the original document, in Cook’s handwriting, of his first exploration voyage in the Pacific on HMS Endeavour in 1768-71.
The first European charting of the east coast of Australia and the first circumnavigation of New Zealand took place on the voyage.
This is the key document which foreshadows British colonisation of Australia (which actually began in 1788) and presaged the tragic consequences for Australia’s indigenous peoples — the oldest surviving culture on Earth — who, under British law, were effectively deemed not to exist (the ‘terra nullius’ doctrine).
