Locomotives built for the Intercolonial Railway will have the mark "ICR" in the "Builder" column, while locomotives built for the CNR will have the mark "CNR", but will be marked in the locomotive listings as "Moncton".
The Grant Locomotive Works formed in 1867 from the New Jersey Locomotive Company, and was yet another locomotive builder from Paterson NJ (The others being Rogers and Cooke).
The North British Locomotive Company was formed in 1903 through the amalgamation of three Glasgow companies: Sharp Stewart at the Atlas Works, Springburn (previously in Manchester); Neilson Reid at the Hyde Park Works, Springburn; and Dübs and Co at the Queen's Park Works, Polmadie.

This engine was built in 1901 by the A. Cooke Locomotive Works for the Texas and Pacific Railway, and is the only operating T. and P. steam locomotive in existence.
This type of locomotive is commonly referred to as a "ten wheeler".
After several years of hard work the mikado was once again ready to go to work in 1978, rolling down the iron rails with style and grace to thrill a new generation of rail enthusiasts.

At the works the close continuous control was eased, statistical and graphic checks were given up, though 'running' charts were elaborated to show performance in mileage, repairs, consumption and so on compared with the engines of other companies, all based on annual reports and Board of Trade returns.
Cook and ILE Obituary note that Beames was born near Dublin on 9 May 1875.
He was recalled to Crewe in April 1916 and made works manager and chief assistant to Cooke, an unusual appointment, for at that time he had no previous managerial experience at all nor the control of any large number of men.

However, the company's principals felt that the manufacture of locomotives in the early and important railroad center bounded by the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers could flourish, and in May, 1851, the Schenectady Locomotive Works was formed.
However, it was customary to regard the Schenectady Works as the senior component due to its role as headquarters.
In 1929 this was followed by the first diesel-electric passenger locomotive, the NY Central's #1550, which was also the first successful road locomotive using this type of propulsion.

At the time, the locomotive probably was lettered "Southern Pacific Lines" in large white letters on her tender, with the number on the cab and the small initials to indicate the actual Southern Pacific subsidiary that owned her.
The Vermilion plant had one steam locomotive to handle switching to the weighing scales and to and from the Southern Pacific, and this generally was another Cooke 1892 4-6-0 purchased from the Southern Pacific.
To move the locomotive to Vermont on a flat car, it proved necessary in meeting height clearance requirements to cut off the roof of the steel cab that had replaced the wooden cab early in the 20th century, but Steamtown retained the cab roof, and moved it to Bellows Falls and then to Scranton.

 Builders Plates - ALCO - Railroadiana Online
The American Locomotive Company, commonly referred to as "ALCO" was formed in June of 1901 in an effort by eight smaller locomotive manufacturers to compete with the giant Baldwin Locomotive Works.
They included the normal American Locomotive Company name, original construction number, in addition to the old and new construction dates, plus some noted the works in which the engines were both built and rebuilt.
The Brooks plate is from I.C. 4-6-2 #2039, the Cooke plate is from Rutland R.R. 0-6-0 #446, later renumbered #101.

Unfortunately, the locomotive, tender, and accompanying rails is now long gone, but the 10' by 50' concrete pad which supported the locomotive and tender is still in place.
The locomotive was removed from the park in January 1988, in an undaunted, lack of public attention kind of way.
Considering that the locomotive had sat unguarded and unprotected for so many years, I felt that we were very lucky that the brass plate had stayed in the proper hands, as had many other fixtures.

The Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works, located in Paterson, New Jersey, manufactured steam railroad locomotives from 1852 until it was merged with seven other manufacturers to form American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1901.
Cooke opened in 1852 as Danforth-Cooke and produced nearly 3000 locomotives before ALCO closed the plant in 1926.
In 1901, Cooke and several other locomotive manufacturers are merged to form the American Locomotive Company; Cooke's plant becomes the Alco-Cooke Works.

The simple placement of a marker lamp(s) on a locomotive, caboose or passenger car was necessary to indicate the end of a train.
Built by the Cooke locomotive works in the first decade of the twentieth century, these 69-inch drivered U-class engines were used in freight and passenger assignments on both main and branch lines.
While the Central men wheeled passengers and priority freight with several of the most highly regarded locomotives of the period, some of their OandW brothers this day were hauling dusty, rattling, empty hoppers toward the mines with "Mother Hubbards" that seemed more the plow horses than thoroughbreds.

It was stationed in Chama from the 1920s on, and the Rio Grande last used it in late January 1957 during one of the most memorable snow fighting operations on Cumbres Pass.
Pushed by locomotive 487, it cleared the track of about three feet of snow for a distance of about two miles north from Chama.
Work Session B. FOCTS volunteers prepared to replace the roof, which had deteriorated so badly that volunteer Roger Silverson remarked that “the roof existed in name only.” Work was done so that the roof beams could be replaced the following year.

The locomotive developed 900 HP from a V12 diesel and was purchased by The New York Central.
In the locomotive, the transmission is usually the main generator and its excitation system, with the final drive being the traction motors and gearing.
The road locomotive's cooling system is very similar except for a few refinements such as radiator shutters (which were featured on some of the early automobiles).

 Galveston Railroad Museum
#314 was a passenger engine constructed in April 1892 by Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works, Patterson, NJ, (Cooke later became part of the American Locomotive Works or Alco, for short) and bore builder's # 2197.
She was originally built for the Houston and Texas Central Railroad and was given the number 114.
She provides an excellent example of the type of engine that brought passenger trains to Galveston in the first half of the 20th Century.

American Locomotive had to remove the oil burner from the firebox and the oil tank from the tender and convert the grates to bum coal fuel, but once the company had completed that work the New York short line had adopted a spiffy little engine that would serve until the end of steam.
With much welding, sheet metal work, and new brass, the company was able to reclaim the scorched locomotive, though four years later a visitor would remark about the Consolidation "still bearing heat marks on her tender-plate from a fire which nearly destroyed her years."
This little postwar Consolidation represents a fairly common wheel arrangement of freight locomotive during the latter decades of the 19th century and down to the end of the era of steam locomotives in the 20th century.

Most builders plate collectors focus attention on locomotive plates, but there are other equipment plates that may be of interest such as trust or lease plates from rolling stock, builders plates from major railroad equipment such as steam derricks and plows, and plates from sub-components of locomotives such as superheaters.
On steam locomotives, this was a square or round plate, usually of cast metal, that indicated the assigned number of the locomotive and sometimes additional information like the builder.

 Cheyenne Botanic Gardens:
Sitting on the north end of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens grounds is the oldest locomotive in Wyoming and one of the oldest intact locomotives ever to run in the Union Pacific (UP) fleet.
This coal/steam powered locomotive was built in December, 1890, in New Jersey by Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works of Patterson, NJ.

In November 1898 the Long Island Rail Road took delivery of a Leslie Brothers-designed rotary snowplow, #193, manufactured by Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works in Paterson, NJ and added it to its inventory of snow plowing equipment.
#83 was constructed by Cooke Locomotive Works in Patterson, NJ in 1898.
An open mouth of a shark, ala P-40 aircraft of WW II, is painted on both sides of the blade of the plow and JAWS III is printed between the forward windows above the blade.

NP steam-powered rotary snowplow No. 2 was constructed by the Cooke Locomotive Works for the road in 1887.
If the wedge was forced to clear heavy, deep snow the locomotives would have to back up, get a full head of steam, and ram the plow into the snow as fast and as hard as possible.
She was retired by the NP in favor of larger, more modern cranes, which were built with 160 to 300 ton capacities.

This extension of life was due to #2248 being converted to a fire control "pumper" locomotive and assigned to the Northern California mountain district to fight forest, wooden snow shed and tunnel fires.
In 1974, #2248 was purchased by the Texas State Railroad and was painted blue with red trim in honor of the United States Bicentennial.
Again, the locomotive became obsolete after five years of service and was stored in Rusk, Texas.

I have picked 1-1/2” scale and 2-1/2” scale in which to build locomotives, primarily because the parts are large enough for me to see and work on.
Since my area of interest is large scale steam locomotives, I like to see the list of vendors that serve this group increase from year-to-year, and they certainly have.
This year, there was Roger’s-Cooke Locomotive Works, Locoworks/Little Engines, Locoparts, Howard Gorin, and a couple of others I was not familiar with as they sell diesel and electric parts and cars, an area I don’t keep up with.

"Work on the extension of the Salt Lake and Mercur railway, to carry the terminus around to and beyond the Mattie group, commenced Tuesday [October 1, 1895].
Crews are now at work lining and straightening that section, reballasting, etc., and then will widen that part of the road from Manti to Morrison, which remains narrow gauge at the moment.
An item lifted from the Denver Republican, late date, regarding locomotive #702 and its mate on the D. and R. G., which were built at the Burnham shops of the Rio Grande; the engines have 20 x 26 inch cylinders, and 63 inch drivers.

Dedicated employees have spent two winters refurbishing the rotary in preparation for what is becoming an annual celebration of snow removal.
Work accomplished includes a completely rebuilt truck assembly, relagging and rejacketing the boiler, hydrostatic testing, new plumbing, running gear repairs, and rebuilt windows and doors.
It takes all the steam power from the rotary just to rotate the huge ten foot diameter steel wheel with its massive steel blades that revolve and slice the snow as the additional engines push them forward.
