First a lens label by NAME as Cooke (or more often, Taylor Hobson Cooke, a renowned English firm) is not apt to be a Cooke Triplet at all, but could be.
I have heard that the early ones before color Xerox copiers were not suitable for general photography as corrected for blue and UV the max sensitivity of the selenium plate.
The famed Zeiss Sonnar copied exactly in the early Japanese f/1.5's is a Cooke triplet with each element multi- compound.

The Cooke Triplet was the name on the 1893 patent by H.D. Taylor.
The first Cooke photographic lens and then Series II through V lenses were designed by H.D. Taylor and made by Taylor, Taylor and Hobson (H.D. Taylor was not a relation.) I believe that all of those first 6 lenses were made of the Cooke Triplet design, meaning they each had 3 elements.
Not to be confused with the Cooke Series XV Triple Convertible lens which allows you to use the combined lenses or the just the back alone or front alone for different focal lengths.

The Cooke catalogs I have refer to "Cooke Process Lenses" rather than Series Vb, but I suspect they are referring to the same lens.
Your suggestions to contact Cooke Optics sounds promising although the writing and serial number are so eroded on the lens barrel.

In a Cooke triplet (I looked this up last night after I posted my earlier message), in very rough terms, the front and rear elements are about equal in power and the center element is about the same power as the sum of the other two but it's negative.
The front element to the center element is about half the distance from the center element to the rear element.
Let's say you had to move it 0.1 mm (triplets are _very_ sensitive).

Here is a picture of a computer optimized wide angle cooke triplet which should work with LCD of 17 inch wide screen format.
I have compared it to a four element optimized glass tessar lens and the tessar is slightly better giving a 32 micron spot for the paraxial axis.
For most application the slight improvement of the tessar over the cooke triplet does not justify the cost and added complexity.
