Her Majesty's Prison Service is the British Executive Agency reporting to the Home Office tasked with managing most of the prisons within England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own Prison Services).
Currently there are seven prisons that have been designed, constructed, managed and financed (so-called DCMF prisons) privately.
Private prisons are subject to scrutiny by the Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons in a similar manner to prisons run by the public Prison Service.

 Custody and Training of Female Prisoners in Scotland
The principle of the responsible prisoner was recognised in that, judging each case on its merits, the Governor was prepared to consider prisoners being allowed to make town visits in the company of their visitors.
Visits were generous and although prisoners looked forward to the weekend leaves escorted by their visitors they admitted to difficulty in coping with the traumatic effect of returning to the prison.
On the one hand many continued to hold the view that prison life should reflect the outside world as far as possible and that prisons should continue to be mixed, with the opportunity being taken to train male criminals in appropriate behaviour towards women.

Her Majesty's Prison Service is the British Executive Agency reporting to the Home Office tasked with managing many of the prisons within the United Kingdom.

On the 9th January 2004 the Service housed 72,478 prisoners, of whom 58,170 were male aged over 21, 10,059 were male aged 15-21, 3,772 were female aged over 21 and 477 females aged 15-21.

The Prison Reform Trust and HM Prison Service are also publishing today an information booklet on foreign national prisoners for staff and prisoners that is intended to begin to improve levels of information and conditions for the 168 different nationalities currently in custody.
Prison must be a very frightening and stressful place for those who are far from home, separated from their families, unable to understand basic instructions and rules or to ask for help and guidance.'
The routine practice of holding asylum seekers in prison who have not committed a criminal offence ended at the beginning of 2002, although the Home Office reserves the right to hold asylum seekers in prison on a case by case basis for reasons of security and control (Hansard, 30th January 2004).

 Action for Prisoner's Families: JAIL PROBLEMS AFFECT CHILDREN TOO
A report from Anne Owers, Chief Inspector of Prisons at HMP Cookham Wood in Kent has highlighted the impact of overcrowding and staffing difficulties on family contact.
Telephone calls from the prison are expensive and now, because of staff shortages, the women are not even being let out of their cells to make calls home to their children and families.
Action for Prisoners' Families is calling for improved family visits, family contact and the involvement of families in resettlement work across the Prison Service.

Although I was interviewing prisoners about their educational background, inevitably during these lengthy in-depth interviews we discussed the nature of the establishments and those who work there, the way sentences were proceeding and what rehabilitative work was going on in prison to address the reasons for offending and to reduce the likelihood of recidivism.
The twelve women's prisons I visited during the two research projects are listed in the Appendix, although I should mention that my knowledge of HMP Foston Hall is confined only to social visiting: events overtook me and I was unable to apply to visit this prison for a longer period of research.
I also became a volunteer helper on a minibus service that escorted children to see their parents in prison: I felt strongly that by meeting the families of women prisoners I would have a fuller picture of what being in prison means to a woman whose children are left at home.

When a prisoner comes to be released on licence, the supervising (home) probation officer will be involved in the planning of any further treatment/support that is necessary in the community and will provide follow-up and monitoring as part of a supervision plan.

In April 1990 she transferred to work as an Administrative Officer at HM Prison Swaleside, which is situated at Eastchurch, in the Isle of Sheppey.
During 1996, after she had held several posts in the Prison, she obtained a temporary promotion to Executive Officer in the Discipline Office of the Prison, with particular responsibilities for calculating the length of sentences that the prisoners had to serve, and their release dates.
However, subject to this, the Prison Service recognises that staff who have the interest and initiative to engage in activities which are outside the scope of their duties, though related to them, are likely to enhance their usefulness to the Service.
