  Mookychick Icon: Cookie Mueller
Cookie Mueller born in Baltimore but when she became a teenager she ran away to join the hippies on Haight-Ashbury in San Fransisco (where she slept with Hendrix, organised psychedelic parties and got raped).
Cookie Mueller died of AIDS in 1989, seven weeks after her Italian cartoonist husband - yes, she did get married after all her adventures - died of the same.
Cookie proved to us by her work, and by the tributes of her friends, that she could live more in a month than most people do in a lifetime.

Cookie Mueller was a free spirit and Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black follows Cookie from her early life in Baltimore, to the halcyon days of Haight/Ashbury in San Francisco and onto her adventures in British Columbia, New York, Sicily and Germany.
Cookie Mueller was a writer, a mother, an outlaw, an actress, a fashion designer, a go-go dancer, a witch-doctor, an art-hag, and above all, a goddess.

Goldin describes her first impression of Cookie as a "cross between a Tobacco Road Outlaw and a Hollywood B-Girl, the most famous women I'd ever seen." Besides being an artist, actress, mom, and wife, Cookie was a friend of Goldin's for over 13 years, over which time Goldin took many pictures of Cookie.
One photograph, Cookie with Max at my birthday party, shows an average mother at a party with her small son.
This closeness is clearly evident in the work by the degree to which Cookie allows herself to be exposed to Goldin's camera, and vice versa.

The Bennett Madison Experience: Idol: Cookie Mueller Archives
Fewer people have heard of underground It Girl Cookie Mueller, but she’s a similar character in her almost Forrest Gumpian talent for stumbling, seemingly haphazardly, upon important moments in a certain un-Gumpian kind of history.
I think at the time she was writing it was probably easy for people to dismiss Cookie as a fun and kooky but semi-inconsequential fringe player—basically a hanger on.
Cookie died of AIDS in 1989, a few weeks after the death of her husband, Vittorio Scarpati.

Cookie Mueller occupies that odd niche in U.S. popular culture in which cult fame is enhanced by mainstream obscurity.
Still, hardly anyone knows who she is. Ask Dr. Mueller collects most of her prose and showcases her vision and style, which are as original as they are smart, and her all-out assault on propriety and decency is both witty and refreshing.
There are also excerpts from a humorous, unorthodox medical-advice column that Mueller fabricated for readers of the East Village Eye and reprints of an anecdotal column she wrote as an art commentator for Details magazine.

The undated Mueller portrait in Peter Hujar is, typically, fl and white (a trait that the book's essays neglect to mention), and it has a reflective tone that's at odds with – a challenge to – Mueller's active presence.
In contrast, Goldin's numerous photographs of Mueller capture her liveliness, until death: her final picture of Mueller is an open-casket shot indebted to earlier Hujar photos, such as his postmortem portrait of Warhol star Jackie Curtis.
There are no Cookie Muellers to be found in Goldin's recent work, also currently at the Fraenkel; the people in her newer photos are comparatively bland as personalities, and they occupy what look like stills from a contemporary Parisian film (a comparison I don't intend as a compliment).

If, for some bizarre reason, Cookie is able to distribute her fiction on time but is unable to attend the class session meant for her workshop, the fiction will be workshopped anyway, in her absence.
