Cooktown Orchid is considered one of Australia's showiest orchid species and has been successfully cultivated in heated glasshouses in England since the latter part of the nineteenth century.
The Cooktown Orchid was depicted on the 25 cent stamp [illust] of the State floral emblem set issued on 10 July 1968, designed by R. and P. Warner.

Cooktown is the northernmost town on the East coast of Australia, located at the mouth of the Endeavour River, 15°28′S 145°17′E on Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia.
Cooktown is a service centre for the district including the Aboriginal communities of Hopevale, 47km to the northwest, and Wujal Wujal, 72km to the south.
Cooktown is also the northern end of the Bicentennial Heritage Trail, which, at 5,330 km (3,312 miles), is the longest trail of its type in the world.

The Cook Museum is here with artefacts, cannons and the like.  Cooktown is one of those places that you go to just for a look and afterwards you are glad you did.  The town retains the flavour of the real Australia with the main street playing host to quite a few pubs.
You can catch big fish from the Cooktown jetty and the view from the hill overlooking the town is magnificent.

 27April 1942 - Crash of a Kittyhawk 50 kms north west of Cooktown, Queensland
So I contacted the local Cooktown historian, Don Sinclair, and he confirmed that the aircraft at the waterline was in fact RAAF A29-69, my uncle's plane.
This is borne out by the molten aluminium evident at the site (more damage than a natural bushfire would inflict) and molten sections on the engine, which is under the custody of Don Sinclair.
One tale is that McGovern's Airacobra was eventually recovered, complete, by barge but that there were heavy seas enroute to Cooktown, and the plane was lost in 20 fathoms of water.
