Coolangatta was one of the earliest settlements at the Gold Coast.
Coolangatta symbolises the terminus of the Gold Coast and the long strip of beach that begins at Main Beach forty kilometres to the north.
To commemorate the centenary of the town, in 1984 a stone from the Coolangatta Estate homestead was donated by the citizens of Coolangatta Historic Village near Berry, New South Wales and was mounted on a plinth of granite from Aberdeen, Scotland, the birthplace of Alexander Berry.

Coolangatta Estate is located on the northern bank of the Shoalhaven River, in the foothills of a mountain called Coolangatta.
The town of Coolangatta in Queensland is named after one of Berry's schooners which was wrecked there in August, 1846.
David died in 1889 at the age of 94, and in 1890 the name of Broughton Creek was changed to Berry to honor the Alexander and David's contribution to the region.

A twin town with Tweed Heads, Coolangatta has a major airport behind Bilinga Beach, and there is a golf club, a leagues club and a major sporting complex in Boyd St, which runs through Tugun, just north of Coolangatta.
Coolangatta Beach and Greenmount Beach form a continuous strand backed by some foreshore greenery with picnic tables, a public telephone and markets along the foreshore on the second Sunday of the month.
To the north of Coolangatta is Currumbin, made famous by the excellent Currumbin Sanctuary which claims to be the home of the world's largest captive collection of Australian native animals, including 1400 species of mammals, reptiles and birds.

In 1971 major restoration work began to convert the old convict-built village into a resort complex and in 1972, to coincide with the 150th anniversary of settlement, the restored site was opened as the Coolangatta Historic Village Resort.
Trips can be arranged to the summit of nearby Mt. Coolangatta, and visitors can also walk to the nearby cemetery (dedicated 1899), to see the graves of some members of the Berry and Hay families.
