A tourist orientation seemed to be in operation by 1904 when Coonabarabran became known as the 'Katoomba of the north west'.
Hickey's Falls are located at the end of a short walking track which departs from a roadside stop, 42 km south-west of Coonabarabran on the Oxley Highway, en route to Gilgandra.

 Visitors Guide to the Mopra Observatory
The map of Coonabarabran (208 kbytes) shows the northern entry into Coonabarabran from Gunnedah, the southern entry from Mendooran and Gilgandra, and the exit towards the Warrumbungle National Park to the west.
Coonabarabran ("The astronomy capital of Australia") is situated on the banks of the Castlereagh River, 509 m above sea level, 450 km north-west of Sydney and 25 km east of the Warrumbungle Ranges and the Warrumbungle National Park.
Coonabarabran has a Visitor Information Centre which can give more details on the attractions in the area, as well as hosting a display of Giant Prehistoric H amsters.

 Visiting Coonabarabran
This exhibition is located in the Coonabarabran Visitor Centre and includes the skeleton of a giant Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to live.
The skeleton was unearthed to the east of Coonabarabran at Tambar Springs in the early 1980's.
Situated in Baradine, 42 km north west of Coonabarabran, this office is the management centre for forestry operations in the Pilliga.

 Welcome to the Warrumbungle Shire Council
On Wednesday 25th August, 2004 Professor Marie Bashir AC, Governor of the State of NSW declared the Areas of Coolah and Coonabarabran to be amalgamated so as to constitute the new Warrumbungle Shire.
Elections were held on Saturday 5th March, 2005 to elect the first Council for the new Shire, consisting of 9 Councillors.
The area incorporates the towns and villages of Coonabarabran, Coolah, Binnaway, Baradine, Mendooran and Dunedoo.

The Coolah and Coonabarabran shire councils, in western NSW, have been abolished and amalgamated into the new Warrumbungle Shire.
The shire's new acting general manager is the former Coonabarabran general manager Robert Geraghty and he says it is exactly what the two councils asked for, to be amalgamated into a new, more efficient shire.
"So we will be looking whilst the administration centre will be in Coonabarabran, to look for a balanced presence in Coolah, so we don't want to withdraw from any of the communities we're in at the moment," he said.

An agreement signed today at a ceremony in the north-western NSW town of Coonabarabran has resolved the Kamilaroi People's native title claim and established certainty over the future use of land next to the town's showground.
Mr Ambrose Doolan, president of the Coonabarabran Pony Club, said the agreement had confirmed the strong relationships that already existed in the community and had helped to develop new ones.
Coonabarabran shire mayor Mr Fred Clancy said that the Kamilaroi families who had lived on the land subject to the MoU had contributed to the development of the shire by working around the district.

Summary Information: The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Kamilaroi People, Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council, Coonabarabran Showground Reserve Trust, Coonabarabran Shire Council and the New South Wales State Government.
The agreement, which was facilitated by the National Native Title Tribunal, grants part of the land next to the Coonabarabran Showground to the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act.

 Tornado near Coonabarabran 2005 Jan 20
There are reports that the tornado was visible from Coonabarabran 21km away and even Mullaley some 40km distant.
The most obvious damage is on the Oxley Highway, 21km by road out of Coonabarabran and 85km from Gunnedah.
In fact, the 85km to Gunnedah sign is within metres of the center of the damage.
