Coonamble is a smallish country town of some 3000 people on the Castlereagh River, 569 km north-west of Sydney, 93 km north of Gilgandra and 180 m above sea-level.
The first bore south of the Darling River was drilled at Coonamble in 1894 and the town and district still rely on artesian water.
The Coonamble Show is held in May, the rodeo in June and the Coonamble Gold Cup in October.

Coonamble shire council commits to sustainable management of used oil
The Coonamble Shire Council has been awarded $35,800 by the Australian Government to install used oil collection facilities at the Coonamble and Quambone Landfills, and the Gulargambone Transfer Station.
Mr Murray Russell, Manager of Works, Coonamble Shire Council encouraged the community to pour their used oil back into an empty oil container with a screw top lid and bring it in to one of the facilities for recycling once they open.

Three children were left orphaned by the blaze 50km south-east of Coonamble which claimed the lives of their parents and a young sibling on Sunday, June 5, 2005.
