Coonawarra's unsurpassed position as Australia's greatest red wine region today is in vivid contrast to the period from 1890 to 1945 as during most of that time wine was distilled into brandy.
Coonawarra boasts the most celebrated vineyard soil in Australia, commonly known as terra rosa, a distinctive thin band of at times vibrant red soil 100cm to 500cm deep overlaying a bed of soft limestone.
The quality of Riesling in Coonawarra has never been disputed, however similarly to Shiraz it has been completely overshadowed by the reputation of the red wines that only two producers have consistently made and released a Riesling in any quantity.

On a personal level, the Parker Coonawarra Estate is an important, even sentimental producer for me. Quite simply, it opened my eyes to the quality of Antipodean wine, after a particularly inebrious evening at a Corney and Barrow wine bar in 1998.
He acquired a patch of land at the southern extremity of Coonawarra in 1985, marked by its cool climate, high water table and its distinct red "Terra Rossa" soil: a rich red loam over a limestone subsoil; perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon.
The vines are usually green harvested and bunch-thinned with the objective or limiting yields to under 4 tonnes/acre with the sorting of berries practiced in the vineyard.

COONAWARRA AND EDEN VALLEY, S.A. Coonawarra and the Eden Valley - The spring of 2001
The spring of 2001 and the summer of 01/02 was one of the coldest in recent history with the dry, cool and occasionally windy conditions resulting in very low yields.
The decision to lower yields was fortuitous with careful canopy management and the lower yields allowing the crop to ripen perfectly and produce high quality fruit that might otherwise have proved difficult in the '02 conditions.

 Vinosense » Coonawarra
I was reading an issue of Harry Waughs Wine Diaries recently that focussed on a visit he made to Australia, and Coonawarra was mentioned as Australia’s ‘only’ fine wine region and indeed it wasn’t all that long ago that it was still considered at the top of the countries wine pyramid.
But Coonawarra seemed to slip out of favour a little, overshadowed by its state-mates McLaren Vale, the Barossa Valley and, further afield Margaret River.
But Coonawarra has been quietly plugging away, cleaning up vineyards and producing some great wines and that is great to see.
