The head of Cooper's Hawk is slightly larger in proportion to the bird's body, the Sharp-shin's smaller.
For decades Cooper's Hawks were regarded as "chicken hawks" and persecuted as predators of poultry.
On the east side of the mountains Cooper's Hawks nest in the few canyons that support significant riparian woodland, such as Alder Canyon (C11), where Paul Jorgensen found a used nest on 20 June 2001, and San Felipe Creek near Scissors Crossing (J22), where Mark Jorgensen found a nest with nestlings on 28 June 2000.

The avifauna includeamong the birds of preythe red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, marsh hawk, Coopers hawk, sharp-shinned hawk and sparrow hawk; the great horned owl, the barn owl and the screech owl; and bald eagles are not uncommon in the mountainous regions along the larger rivers.
In the mountain region and in the vicinity of Lake Erie there is often a fall of several inches of snow during the winter months and the rapid melting of this produces floods on the Delaware, Susquehanna and Ohio rivers and some of their tributaries.
The prevailing winds are westerly, but they are frequently interrupted by warm breezes from the south, or moisture-bearing currents from the east.

A juvenile Cooper's Hawk was the only raptor observed today, Turkey Vultures were overhead and a Cassin's Vireo along the creek just before the Herb Garden was the other highlight of our walk.

Cooper's hawks are seen in increasing numbers while Sharp-shins are declining due to habitat.
It can be distinguished from the Cooper's hawk by its small size and the squared-off shape of the tip of its tail.

Cooper's Hawk, as noted before, are more of a forest edge bird, often seen dodging about from one fragmented grouping of trees to another.
In contrast, it appears that Cooper's Hawks may be more of a 'patroling' type species; moving about from backyard to backyard, edge to edge, etc. In this manner, it may be assumed that Cooper's would then be the more often observed species...being more obvious to the observer.
Cooper's Hawk is a more frequently reported breeder end is more adapted to forest fragmentation.

Hawks counted in Granville were a BLACK VULTURE, 2 TURKEY VULTURES, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 3 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, a COOPERS HAWK, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 76 RED-TAILED HAWKS and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.
Hawks noted migrating over Blueberry Hill in Granville this week were 11 TURKEY VULTURES, 2 BALD EAGLES, 9 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 19 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 4 COOPERS HAWKS, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, 2 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and 43 RED-TAILED HAWKS.
Hawks migrating past Shatterack Mt in Russell were 3 TURKEY VULTURES, 3 BALD EAGLES, 3 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 5 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, a COOPERS HAWK, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 36 RED-TAILED HAWKS, and a GOLDEN EAGLE.

From 0920-1040 the following were deemed to be migrating: Turkey Vulture (2) Bald Eagle (1 white belly) Sharp-shinned Hawk (4) Cooper's Hawk (1) Northern Goshawk (1) Red-tailed Hawk (6) Rough-legged Hawk (1 light phase) Golden Eagle (1 imm.) Grackle, Starling, Cardinal and Goldfinch.
WESTFIELD (from the Western Voice of Audubon) Migrants counted going over Little River in Westfield this week were 1,000 CANADA GEESE, 67 TURKEY VULTURES, 13 OSPREYS, 4 BALD EAGLES, 39 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 3 COOPERS HAWKS, 30 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 18 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 4 MERLINS, and 3 PEREGRINE FALCONS.

Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported 1 BLACK VULTURE, 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 12 OSPREY, 2 BALD EAGLES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 5 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 17 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS from April 28 to May 3 (KJ, MJ, JR, RM, MMc, CMi, MMi).

The Sharp-Shinned Hawk is named for the thin ridge which runs along the bird's long legs, or tarsus, giving the appearance of a "sharp shin".
This hawk displays the most pronounced sexual dimorphism of any of the hawks with the female being considerably larger than the male.

Along with Cooper's Hawks, this is the hawk most often seen by people and reported as a "big" hawk.
Pairs and young can be quite vocal during nesting, and will defend nest area from humans, Red-shoulder juvenile plumage resembles that of a Cooper's Hawk juveniles; Red-shoulders get their adult reddish shoulder patch and black and white tail bands in their second year.
Nests are usually in an oak tree about 50 feet up, and often very near a house.

Hawks migrating today in the rain at Barre Falls: 21 Osprey, 1 Bald Eagle, 6 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 16 Broad-winged Hawks, 2 Kestrels and 1 Merlin.
While hawk watching at Barre Falls Dam today, I saw the following both migrating and not migrating raptors: 8 Turkey Vultures, 6 Ospreys, 7 Kestrels, 5 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 2 Cooper's Hawks and 1 Broad-winged Hawk.
