		By 1946 the state of South Carolina purchased the bridge from the Cooper River Bridge, Inc. Tolls were henceforth removed upon the completion of the sale.
		Ravenel was one of the staunch proponents in the drive to finance and replace the aging Cooper River Bridges of U.S. 17, and he was able to do so without the implementing of tolls.

		In 1994 I decided to go further down the Cooper where the river had extremely fast current that you had to dig your knife into the ground to stop you from flying down river and missing the boat.
		The river down there was wider and had marsh on both sides with plenty of gators.
		One diver had is neck broke by a gator while diving for shark teeth and was shoved into a culvert pipe in the upper part of the cooper river.
