Topic: Cooperite

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

 [No title]
A substitution of Pd+Ni for Pt with a Pd:Ni ratio of approximately 7:3 in braggite and approximately 9:11 in cooperite is deduced.
Recent research on coexisting cooperite and braggite is aimed towards quantification of the behaviour of Pt and Pd in crystallizing sulphide melts.
The phases observed at 1100°C are "cooperite" and a melt, at 1000°C "cooperite", "braggite", and a melt and at 900°C "cooperite", "braggite", "vysotskite", "millerite", and a melt.

Cooperite is well known in various types of ores of Norilsk.
Cooperite, along with sperrylite, is one of the most widespread Pt minerals in Norilsk ores, however sperrylite and cooperite are typical for different Cu-Ni ores.
Grain of cooperite is isometric and it is possible to assume that it has relics of primary faces.

EUHEDRAL CRYSTALS OF FERROAN PLATINUM, COOPERITE AND PALLADIAN ANTIMONIDE FROM THE DARYA PLACER, ALDAN SHIELD, RUSSIA
Perfectly idiomorphic crystals (up to about 3 mm large) of ferroan platinum, cooperite and palladian antimonide were found in the Darya alluvial Au-PGE placer located in the Aldan Shield (Khabarovskiy Kray, Russia).
The Aldan Shield hosts several PGE placer deposits (Kondyor, Inagli, Chad, Sibakh, Darya), which are mostly related to zoned clinopyroxenite-dunite intrusions of Alaskan/Uralian type.
Cooperite is abundant and occurs both in large euhedral crystals (up to 3 mm across, partly twinned) and as overgrowth aggregates on Pt-Fe crystals.

All the minerals in the chemical classes covered (elements, sulfides, sulfosalts, etc.) are combined in one alphabetically arranged volume (from acanthite to zvyagintsevite).
For those familiar with the chemical class separations of the Dana System, this requires some adjustment (copper follows cooperite and precedes corderoite).
For those who have used and learned the Dana System, this format requires even more adjustment; for most, the adjustment should be easy.

The Cooperite answered that since this method was so daring, no one would ever believe that it was done that way, and so the CIA could easily get away with it.

This paper discusses the potentials of three powerful techniques - 2D correlation analysis, the calculation of the second derivatives, and that of regression coefficients in chemometrics, in unraveling rather complicated NIR spectra.
Raman spectra of synthetic "braggite" (Pt, Pd, Ni)S with variable Pt/Pd ratios (atomic ratios between 0.31 and 1.37) and saturated in Ni (up to 1.99 atomic %) have been recorded and compared with the Raman spectra of synthetic "cooperite" and the pure palladium and platinum sulfides.
In order to obtain more information on the significant differences in the spectra of these synthetic samples, a factor group analyses of "braggite" and "cooperite" have been performed.

The mineralogy of the Stillwater Pt/Pd ore consists of up to 1 % sulphides comprising chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, ± pyrite hosted by a chromite-rich ultramafic layer.
The main platinum–bearing minerals are Braggite (Pt,Pd,Ni)S, Cooperite (Pt, Pd,Ni)S as well as Isoferroplatinum (PtFe3) and Moncheite (Pt,Pd)(Te,Bi)2.
The majority of the palladium is hosted as solid solution within the pendlandite ((Fe,Ni)9S8); less then 15 % as Vysotskite (Pd,Ni,Pt)S, Bragite, Cooperite and Moncheite.

My Ph.D. work concerns computer simulation of a few representative of Platinum Group Minerals [cooperite (PtS), braggite (Pd,PtS), Sperrylite (PtAs 2) and Platarsite (PtAsS)], which are of industrial importance to the mining industry.
The work is focused on understanding the structure, electronic, optical properties and reactivity of these systems, which are important sources of platinum and palladium in many of the world's largest deposits.
The work is the collaboration between Materials Modelling Centre, University of the North (SA), Material Modelling Lab, Oxford (UK), and Computational chemistry, Bath (UK), sponsored by National Research Foundation (South Africa) and Royal Society (United Kingdom).

 PMR: View A Question
Platinum can occur in many forms in nature.
The platinum group elements (platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, osmium) generally occur as alloys with iron or with transition group metals such as arsenic, tellurium, antimony, and vanadium; or as mixed platinum-palladium sulphide minerals (cooperite and braggite).
They are typically associated with copper and nickel sulphide mineralisation (commonly chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite) and/or with chromite.
