Topic: Coordination game

  Game Theory
Game theory is the study of the ways in which strategic interactions among rational players produce outcomes with respect to the preferences (or utilities) of those players, none of which might have been intended by any of them.
Since game theory is about rational action given the strategically significant actions of others, it should not surprise you to be told that what agents in games know, or fail to know, about each others' actions makes a considerable difference to the logic of our analyses, as we will see.
Matrix games are referred to as ‘normal-form’ or ‘strategic-form’ games, and games as trees are referred to as ‘extensive-form’ games.

 When Are Nash Equilibria Self-Enforcing
In this game, however, there is a safe strategy and a player intending to play this strategy has no strict preference over his or her opponent's choice, thus Aumann's argument does not apply.
In this, Game III, payoffs are structured so that a player choosing Blue prefers his or her opponent to also choose Blue, and a player choosing Red prefers his or her opponent to also choose Red.
We investigate the role of communication in coordination games by comparing the efficacy of communication in a game which is not subject to Aumann's critique, Game I, with a game which is subject to it, Game II.

 Game Theory by David K
While game theory has applications to "games" such as poker and chess, it is the social situations that are the core of modern research in game theory.
Game theory has two main branches: Non-cooperative game theory models a social situation by specifying the options, incentives and information of the "players" and attempts to determine how they will play.
The battle of the sexes game has two Nash equilibria: both go to the opera, or both go to the ball game: if each expects the other to go to the opera (ballgame) the best response is to go to the opera (ballgame).

Y2K Bibliography of Experimental Economics and Social Science: Game Theory Experiments
Abstract: Signaling games with "reverse type dependence" lead to behavior in the laboratory that violates all of the standard refinements of the Nash equilibrium (intuitive criterion, divinity, strategic stability, etc.) The history of the adjustment path seems to determine out-of-equilibrium beliefs that are ruled out by these refinements.
Abstract: Subjects are randomly matched in 2x2 coordination games, and the subject designated as a "sender" sends a message about intended play, which is read by the "receiver" prior to the point at which both make their decisions.
In both types of coordination games considered, observed effort distributions are inversely related to effort costs, an intuitive experimental result that is not explained by the perfect-rationality Nash model.

Coordination Game   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
This is called a "coordination game" since any common effort is a Nash equilibrium as long as the unit cost is less than 1.
The coordination game has fascinated economists because of the possibility of "getting stuck" in a bad, low-effort equilibrium.
These intuitive results are not explained by the Nash predictions, which are independent of the number of players and effort cost (as long as it is less than 1).

Legal Philosophy: The Economic Analysis of Law
In a coordination game, the interests of all players are coincident; each player ranks the possible outcomes of the game identically.
This game has two equilibria: all choose R and all choose L. Unfortunately, knowledge that two equilibria exist does not help agents determine which strategy to adopt, or, alternatively which equilibrium to play.
Moreover, it is not clear that the acceptance of a rule of recognition by public officials constitutes a coordination game.

Tax Compliance as a Coordination Game
This paper uses laboratory experiments to investigate compliance behavior when returns are selected for audit based upon the deviation of each individual's tax report from the average report of all other taxpayers.
Nevertheless, the tax authority is able to overcome this taxpayer coordination by a subtle change is its audit rule, a change that targets the audits in a different way without increasing the number of audits.

Coordination games can be understood as placing people into a hierarchy of social roles or ``stages'': ``initial adopters,'' then ``followers,'' and so on down to ``late adopters.'' We show that a communication network helps coordination in exactly two ways: by informing each stage about earlier stages, and by creating common knowledge within each stage.
The main result is that advertisers of ``coordination problem'' or ``social'' goods, in our sample computers, beer, pizza, and wine, tend to advertise on more popular shows and are willing to spend significantly more per viewer than advertisers of other products such as batteries, deodorant, and breakfast cereal.
Coordination problems are crucial in a wide variety of social contexts, from social movements to technological change to macroeconomics.

Abstract: The problem of coordination failure, particularly in 'team production' situations, is central to a large number of mircroeconomic as well as macroeconomic models.
As this type of inefficient coordination poses a severe economic problem, there is a need for institutions that foster efficient coordination of individual economic plans.
In a series of laboratory experiments, we reveal that the true reason for coordination failure is strategic uncertainty, which can be reduced almost completely by introducing a appropriately designed mechanism of (inter-group) competition.

Fly control is a coordination game
Although most producers realize that fly numbers peak in June, they don't realize there is also another peak in August, long after most control methods have been forgotten and the efficacy of the insecticide used has been drastically reduced.
In recommending programs, I try to coordinate the timing of the application of fly control to be as close as possible to June to give the best results.
However, branding calves and sorting cows for the range may be done earlier, and producers do not like to handle cows and calves again just for fly control.

We report experimental results on a simple coordination game in which two players can coordinate either on an equal distribution of payoffs or on a Pareto superior but unequal distribution of payoffs.
We find that the higher the difference in individual payoffs, the less likely is a successful coordination on the Pareto superior distribution.
While this is well in line with the recent models of inequity aversion, our results are best explained not by a preference for equality per se but rather by the belief that the opponent has such a preference.
