DVD of the Week: (6/16/2003): Violent Cop
Violent Cop was Kitano& first film as a director, but he wound up helming the movie under slightly odd circumstances.
The first scene in Violent Cop, easily the darkest and most unforgiving movie Kitano ever made, sets the movie's bleak tone: a gang of teenaged boys beating a homeless man senseless.
The movie seethes with real cruelty -- not the stylized shootings of most cop movies, but one-on-one brutality that springs from genuinely ugly places inside the characters.

 Alien Nation Movie
The fact that it is just a cop movie with aliens is what makes this movie a little groundbreaking.
The cinematography, settings, script, and style all fall victims to the cop movie theme as they are all nothing to really write home about when compared to other police films.
A routine cop thriller with a comedic sci-fi twist, Alien Nation> has two things working in its favor: Caan and Patinkin form a memorable duo, and the basic premise--as conceived by Rockne S. O'Bannon (who later developed the film as a TV series)--intelligently accounts for the sociological impact of an alien population.

 Beverly Hills Cop (1984)
There are a lot of classic ploys in the movie, such as the fact that Foley is a cool, street smart cop from Detroit, while the guys assigned to follow him are geeky white police officers from Beverly Hills, presumably not used to dealing with tough cops or tough criminals.
Okay, so even though I claim to be pretty knowledgeable about the movies, I won't say that this is the original buddy cop movie because I'm sure there were some before it, but Beverly Hills Cop is quite possibly the most famous buddy cop series, with the probable exception of the Lethal Weapon series.
What I like about Beverly Hills Cop is that, while it's falls into a sub genre that is a cliché in itself (by now, at least), it does something a little different in the way that it's structured.

"Cop Land" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Cop Land was not near as good a movie as I suspected, but had many original scenes and great actors which made the movie worth seeing..
I thought that "Cop Land" was a very good movie, and was surprised when I saw it; it wasn't the seventies action knockoff I thought it would be, but an entertaining drama with an interesting plot.
Cop Land is the story of a small town sheriff named Freddy (Stallone), who tries to keep the peace in the face of corruption.

 WashingtonPost.com: 'Cop Land': Heavy Muddle
They hang in a lounge -- one point made by the movie is that Cop Land, Cop Land is essentially a wonderful bar and grill land -- where they drink, curse, stick darts up each other’s noses and plot against each other.
To prevent his railroading, the cops spirit him back to Cop Land where they mean to stash him until they can set him up in a new identity -- that’s a pretty thin device.
What initiates the action of the film is that one of the cops -- Maury "Superboy" Babitch, well-played by Michael Rapaport -- accidentally guns down a couple of joy-riding black teenagers as he heads across the George Washington Bridge.

 Showtime (2002)
Plot Outline: A spoof of buddy cop movies where two very different cops are forced to team up on a new reality based T.V. cop show.
"Showtime" is a step down for DeNiro, Murphy, and Russo as it stomps clumsily through its story about an all business detective (DeNiro) and an hammy wannabe actor uniform street cop (Murphy) who become the centerpieces of a reality TV show of the title name and a criminal investigation involving a sort of super gun.

 The Popkorn Junkie :: NARC
"Narc" surprised me. I was not expecting to walk out as unsure as I was, and I certainly wasn't expecting to finally reach the conclusion that is was the best cop film I had ever seen.
However, on the long drive home, I had time to reflect on the film and--by the time I arrived home--had reached the conclusion that "Narc" might be the best cop film of all-time, and that is a bold statement when you consider the plethora of fantastic cop films out there.
I was really looking forward to this movie because of all the hype from critics, the great word-of-mouth and the fact that I'm a huge Ray Liotta fan.

If many cop-partner movies have an undertone of humor, even a splash of "The Odd Couple," this one is hard-bitten and grim: The team consists of Bad Cop and Bad Cop.
In terms of its urban wasteland, the movie descends to a new level of grittiness.
The movie's writer and director, Joe Carnahan, brings a rough, aggressive energy to the picture.

Movie Review: Narc / Mountain Xpress / Asheville, NC
Cop Drama Narc' s unforgettable opening sequence explodes at a no-holds-barred pace that then doesn't abate for the next 100 minutes of this mean, mesmerizing, adrenaline-charged, repulsive, violent and tragic bad-cop movie.
Undercover narc Nick Tellis (Jason Patric, Incognito) chases a drug dealer through the vice-infested back streets of urban Detroit – where bullets fly, a uniformed cop dies begging for help as his blood waterfalls from him and a pregnant woman is hit in the belly by a ricocheting bullet that kills her unborn child.
And that's what this movie is really about – the contagion of evil, and the moral complicity of men who crawl too close to the slugs in society's underbelly.

COP LAND is a serious drama about police corruption, not necessarily an action film.
Freddy's only true ally is Gary "Figs" Figgis (Ray Liotta), the one cop who's moved outside the inner circles of COP LAND after losing his partner, the same officer who committed suicide in prison two years before.

After a bit of prodding Santoshi confided that he was now making a mega-budget film called Khaki which would have Bachchan portraying a serious super-cop (a deputy commissioner of police) in sheer contrast to the wacky policewala portions in Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan.
Meanwhile the Bachchan is believed to have discreetly opted out of this movie Police Force being directed by Madhur Bhandarkar.

" is the latest in this long line of buddy-cop movies.

 Good Cop, Bad Cop, Buddy-Cop
In a sense, this is completely understandable: The buddy-cop movie often has a fish-out-of-water element to it, and there's no easier shorthand for that than the exaggerated experience of American blacks.
While the buddy-cop movie might seem to be a product of the '80s, it's actually a distant cousin of the screwball comedies of the '30s and '40s.
Since then, the film's star, Jackie Chan, has made four more of these next-generation buddy-cop movies, some with a black co-star and some with a white co-star.

Ebony: Eddie Murphy: Hollywood's $2 billion man talks about his marriage, 'Beverly Hills Cop III' and the joys of fatherhood - Cover Story
Although Murphy is at the pinnacle of his success, some critics continue to say (since Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987) the entertainer's movie career has been on the decline--even though his films do well at the box office.
This movie, Murphy says, is "infinitely better than Beverly Hills Cop II" (which made about $300 million), and it's also different from the trilogy's first installment because Axel is more mature and no longer the wisecracking rookie cop.
Murphy's ability to put people in the seats will be tested again on Memorial Day weekend when his 13th movie, the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop III, opens nationwide, with co-stars Judge Reinhold, Hector Elizondo, Theresa Randle and Alan Young.

Starsky and Hutch London Movie Review
Ben Stiller stars as David Starsky, a career-obsessed, overly uptight cop forever trying to live up to the memory of his super-cop Mom (“Your mother was the finest cop I ever knew”).
Big screen adaptations of old TV shows over the years have ranged from the positively inspired (The Brady Bunch Movie) to the downright appalling (Lost in Space; The Beverley Hillbillies) and, as such, they’re difficult to predict.
In short, Starsky and Hutch is definitely worth seeing and firmly establishes Stiller and Wilson as THE comedy duo of the noughties (or whatever we’re calling the 00s).
