  Cop Land (1997): Reviews
Cop Land emerges as a first-rate morality play in the form of an effective, if occasionally unwieldy, crime drama.
Cop Land isn't a perfect piece, but it's sober, wise and adult.
Cop Land presents a fairly involved plot, and Mangold is not equipped to do more than blurt all the information onto the screen and let the nuances settle where they may.

 SPLICEDwire | "Cop Land" review
"Cop Land" is being touted as an ensemble piece, what with a top-of-the-bill cast that includes Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta, as crooked New York cops running a crime syndicate out of a sleepy New Jersey town, and Robert De Niro as an Internal Affairs officer riding their pecs.
Helmed by sophomore writer-director James Mangold ("Heavy"), "Cop Land" is a Scorsese-styled fairy tale of Freddie's last chance to prove his worth to himself.
Each recycled cop story staple is given a slightly fresh twist, like the inevitable shoot-out between Freddie and the crooked cops, which is shot from Freddie's perspective and in muffled tones because Freddie is partially deaf.

 cop land
The sophomore effort of writer-director James Mangold (whose debut was last year's Heavy), Cop Land has the cast of a Scorsese film, the muckraking police-corruption plot of a Lumet film, and the leisurely pace and character focus of a Sayles film.
Denied a true cop's life by one moment of heroism, Freddy is now too frightened to stick his head out of his shell (note the stuffed turtle Mangold plants).
I sympathize with some of the criticism of Cop Land: There's too much plot and too many characters, and the film needed to be either streamlined or lengthened.

Freddy's one friend among the cop community, Figgis is nearly as fat as he is (Liotta demonstrates how weight gain can be incorporated into a performance, not replace it) and his speedy non-sequitur rap, his zesty nihilism, and his host of conflicting demons bounce nicely off Freddy's stolidity.

"Cop Land," which owes something to the classic Westerns "High Noon" and "Rio Bravo," was written and directed by James Mangold, whose only other movie is the low-key blue-collar drama "Heavy," a seriously low-budget effort about an overweight pizza chef who develops an ill-fated crush on a co-worker.
"Cop Land" is rated R for violence and a fair amount of profane and vulgar language — though it's not anywhere near Quentin Tarantino territory.

Cop Land is a serious drama that only makes use of its subject matter and action to help amplify the point; Cop Land is not a "Police movie" with good character development, it's a story about courage, strength, suffering, and human integrity that's independent of the surface-subject matter.

Somehow Cop Land has escaped the nasty excessive high-frequency filtering that has marred many other recent (and high profile) releases, and though the image may still be *slightly* rolled-off, the effect is one with a satisfying degree of natural film detail that doesn't leave you feeling like you're missing something.
